85. Celtics, don’t get enough credit for having the leagues’s bestrecord that year. Media outlets pointed out they only got the best record by one game over the Lakers, but keep in mind they did it playing in the much more competitive eastern conference where three of the four best teams were located. the Lakers only had to play one team the west with over 50 wins and that team only had 52 wins. And it should also be noted. The Lakers pretty much always had three extra home games at this point when they got to play the Clippers. That makes the Celtics record in the east much more impressive. It’s a shame that Larry Bird not being 100% caused them not to repeat and I don’t wanna hear it because of a bar fight. His elbow was already hurt before the bar fight causing him to miss a third game in the Cleveland series.
58:40 That's some amazing body control from Charles there. I remember when Cornbread was starting out as the C's announcer. They were talking about the upcoming draft and someone said that Elton Brand reminded them of Charles Barkley. Maxwell scoffed "Yeah, Charles Barkley's SISTER, maybe!!"
The starting line-up of each team was pretty stacked. Considering all 10 of the starters in this game and Kevin McHale (11 players total), some interesting facts. * None (0/11) of the players joined their respective team via the Kevin James Load Managment violation. * Every player except Charles Barkley (10/11) won an NBA Championship. * All are in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (8/11) except Cedric Maxwell, Danny Ainge, and Andrew Toney. * 7 of the 11 NBA players have been on an All NBA Team except Cedric Maxwell, Danny Ainge, Andrew Toney, and Maurice Cheeks. * All have played in at least one All Star Game (10/11) except Cedric Maxwell. * Cedric Maxwell is not in the Naismith Basketball HoF, was never on an All NBA team, or even participated in an ASG, but he played a pivotal role on two NBA Boston Celtic Championship teams in 1981 and 1984 and was the NBA Finals MVP in 1981.
Carlos Clark played a really good game here. It's a shame he never got more playing time but the Celtics picked up Ray Williams shortly after this game and Carlos never got back into the rotation. Clark was cut the following year as Celts opted to keep Rick Carlisle instead. Carlos could have been a good player with the right team at the right time.
Funny how they say that the C's deny wanting to trade Maxwell, followed by a segment about how well Bill Walton was doing. Also funny how they praise the shooting of DJ and Ainge, when their shooting was horrible in game 6 of the finals, which cost them that game and the series.
85 was the first year they did the 2-3-2 format in the finals and as things turned out I think it really hurt the C's. The dynamic would have been completely different coming back to Boston after the dramatic win in game 4.If they could have rode it to a win then they'd be sure of a game 7 at home. Instead they had to try to win two straight road games, something neither team ever did in their match ups. It could have easily turned out the same, but the change messed up the flow of a series, which is why I've never liked it.
Sixers were still a great team, starting Barkley, Moses, and Dr J. They split the regular season 3-3 with Boston, but the Celts owned them in the East finals.
At 1:35:10 , When They Bring Up Bird & Dr. J's Fight. NOTE: Bird & Dr.J, Made A Pact With Each Other, Neither One Of Them Would Ever Sign A Poster/Picture/Card & So On, Of That Fight. They Both Felt Bad About What They Did. So, If Any One Has Ever Gotten Any Signed Anything Of That Fight, It's Worthless. You Just Lost Your Money & Bragging Rights.
