5 is and always has been my favourite. I love that he thinks on his feet and often seems exasperated

5 has always been one of my favourites, his arc of letting people down and failing to save the people he loves across his era culminating in him sacrificing his life for a person he barely knows.

I really love the 5th's rather genteel nature. It's a nice breath of fresh air.

Peter Davison is my favorite Doctor! I enjoy his entire era! Maybe it's because I'm not neurotypical and always feel like an outsider, but his character speaks to me. I don't think it's that he doesn't care. But sometimes if people realize you care, they expect more out of you than what you can give. So, he does what he can and stays a little cold. But he obviously cares about his friends.

I got to meet Mr. Davison at a convention once. One of the few times I was really starstruck. I told him he was my favorite Doctor and he just did not believe me. It's true, though.

What truly mae 5 stand out for me was how the writers really tried to "humanize" the Doctor, he's not your "impossible man that can do everything", he's a very smart man who's doing his best to try and be the hero he thinks people need.
5 is by far the most insecure of all Doctors, he finds himself most times in a lot of situations where he cannot win, having to do stuff he's not proud of or putting his own life on the line to surpass impossible odds, all this while triying to maintain that posture of a trustworthy man, as if he's triying to "live up" to his own name.

I specially found this take on the doctor quite refreshing after 7 seasons with Tom Baker, whom i'd describe as one of the most "alien" Doctors, which isn't a bad thing, but getting to see such a different take really reignited my interest in where the show was going, it may have even generated a certain bias on me towards the "less weird" incarnations of the Doctor.

Even if 5 isn't one of my favorites, i consider him a very important part of the show's history, as in previous eras the Doctor would mostly be shown as having the moral high ground, his biggest flaw being his addiction for adventures as a free spirit, something that often ended up creating distance with his companions, and this era took that to another level, while also making the Doctor question more and more his own morality with some (albeit rather basic) moral dilemmas during his run.
I would even argue 5 starts an idea that carries over trough the rest of the show "What happens if The Doctor gets tired of being The Doctor?", an idea that for me starts right here, where the Doctor is often tempted with violence as the most simple answer, but he always doubts and tries to do "What the Doctor would do".

Even if his era doesn't live up to all it tried to do, i would at least applaud it for what it tried, it felt like the show had a true idea of what it wanted to be and didn't lose track of it.

This is by far the best defence of the Davison era I have heard. Fascinating perspective! 😄

I feel like a significant factor in people's reactions to the Fifth Doctor's era is that the writing and the acting was a bit too subtle at times, despite being much less subtle (or not at all, as with e.g. the Cold War metaphors in Warriors of the Deep) at others, and without being consistent enough about when.  The lack of subtlety in some scenes increases the number of people who don't notice or think about the subtle bits.

The 5th doctors audio stories are amazing, Spare parts listening to him despairing over the idea he probably can't save Mondas is damn compelling not to mention him and Nyssa having huge discomfort dealing with the cybermen as they are reminded of Adric's death but despite that hang up they want to help Mondas's people in the end.

But violence doesn’t always have consequences, depending on whether you’re talking about justice or cause and effect. There will always be an effect, but there won’t always be justice. Usually not, in fact.

Davison's doctors ranks up pretty highly for me (following Troughton and Hartnell). His post regeneration scene won me over within minutes! While he may not be perfect, his body language was pretty clear what he was thinking. And as far as a 3 companion team, well, Hartnell had quite a beginner team too, so that was okay too.

The Fifth Doctor is way darker than people think. Anyone who can be so flippant about the May Queen's fate in The Awakening: '...the toast of Little Hodcombe!' Even Will Chandler calls him out on that.

Thanks for the great video.  Five is my favorite Doctor.  Davison's acting is excellent throughout his three seasons, he can communicate a great deal without speaking.  The drama comes to the forefront in this era, a precursor of what RTD would do in New Who.  Davison's performance always ratchets up the drama.   His work in Caves of Androzani is outstanding.

My friend and I watched Drs Four and Five during first run, when the show would come to the US.  My opinion is that anyone who would have been cast after Tom Baker's run was in a no-win situation, and that Davison's characterization and stories were a very good decision for how to go.  I liked Davison, and my friend and I supported him and his stories with each other.  He got a raw deal, I think.  But then, anyone after the Baker era would have.

The 5th Doctor was my Doctor.  I think it was deliberate choice to make the Doctor fallible compared to the 4th.  Yes - I think the writing during his period was patchy(which Davison himself has criticised), but there are still some gems to be found in his era : The Visitation, Earthshock(I think that Saward's masterpiece), Mawdryn Undead, Enlightenment, Resurrection of the Daleks and The Caves of Androzani.
