There’s a hidden side of England most people never see: abandoned villages, lost medieval towns, secret military sites, strange churches and eerie places steeped in folklore and dark history. In this countdown we explore 30 forgotten places in England, from quietly odd hidden gems to genuinely creepy locations you can still visit today.

We start at Mother Shipton’s Cave and its Petrifying Well, then head down the cobbled, car-free street of Clovelly, a village privately owned by one family since 1738. We visit Piel Island and its crowned “King,” the Hellfire Caves of West Wycombe, the mermaid legend of Zennor, and Heptonstall, the resting place of the Cragg Vale Coiners. We explore Ravenscar, “the town that never was,” the ruined hall at Wycoller, the strange rock formations of Brimham Rocks and the witch legend of Mitchell’s Fold stone circle.

Along the way we uncover Hardknott Roman Fort on one of England’s steepest roads, the explicit carvings of Kilpeck Church, the waterfall at St Nectan’s Glen, and Knowlton Church, a Norman ruin built in the middle of a Neolithic henge. We cross to Burgh Island by sea tractor, visit the lesser-known Stanton Drew stone circles and the Rollright Stones, and stand over Hallsands, a Devon village destroyed by the sea in a single night.

Then the stories get darker. Happisburgh, where 850,000-year-old human footprints appeared on the beach. Mardale Green, the drowned village beneath Haweswater reservoir. Wistman’s Wood, home of Dartmoor’s spectral hounds. Lundy Island and its illegal currency. The Chislehurst Caves, wartime shelter turned rock venue. And Imber, the Wiltshire village the army took in 1943 and never gave back.

Our top entries include Orford Ness, the secret Cold War test site; Creswell Crags, with Britain’s only confirmed Ice Age cave art and hundreds of witch marks; Wharram Percy, the deserted medieval village where the dead may have been mutilated to stop them rising; and Dunwich, the lost medieval city lying at the bottom of the North Sea.
