Blessed to have seen him in concert (with his protogee Mad Professor; it was so loud; my ears hurt afterwards, but i was happy... This was in San Francisco, 1996 maybe?) ... He was like a shriveled little mummy on the stage; he barely moved, and he smoked his ganja the whole time, non-stop, and he made direct eye contact with everyone he could see... I'm not a linguist, but I'm pretty sure he was speaking Hebrew or Ge'ez half the time... it was like being in the presence of a living saint or a high-holy guru... There was no violence at the dancehall that night; we were all WAY too stoned to fight... Us skinheads got along with the hippies, and everyone had a blast... Many jackets and hats were lost, and the taco place next door had a record night... I was also lucky to see Bunny Wailer around the same time, in Berkeley California; Bunny's show was much more "churchy" and explicitly "Rastafarian"... Bunny's show was almost like an Ethiopian Orthodox Church Liturgy; it was great, but Scratch's show was more like a Native (American) sweat-lodge...
A lot of stupid comments about the origins of "Hip Hop/Rap" here... This is DUB... It's JAMAICAN, and the youth of today have no clue where anything comes from.
Edit: I'm not denying that Jamaican music was a big influence on Hip hop, (among other genres of music). LSP did not invent hip hop, but I doubt that Hip hop could've been invented without his innovations.
Lee Perry is so unique, I can’t believe my ear sometimes, those rythm are so genious and with perfect accuracy in the detail of every instrument. Everything is responding with perfection and synchronicity. This is so pure language. No body has never been at this level, no doubt he is the geatest ever as a reggae muscian.
One of my all-time favorite tracks on this album is Upsetting Rhythm #1, but not only is the album itself hard to find, that particular track feels all but absent from the internet. Thanks for the upload!
