Themistocles saved Greece at the Battle of Salamis. Without his strategy, Athens — and perhaps the world of Classical Greece — might never have existed as we know it.

Yet the city he saved eventually exiled him, accused him of treason, and forced him to flee into the arms of Persia — the very empire he had once defeated.

But was Themistocles truly a traitor?

Behind his extraordinary rise and dramatic fall lies a story of political rivalry, ambition, exile, and two secret messages sent to the Persian king. One helped destroy Xerxes’ fleet at Salamis. The other may have saved Themistocles himself years later.

From the silver mines of Laurion and the creation of the Athenian fleet to Salamis, ostracism, his flight across Greece and his final years in the Persian Empire, this is the remarkable story of one of the most brilliant — and controversial — figures of Ancient Greece.

Was Themistocles a man who betrayed Athens… or a man betrayed by the city he had saved?

Watch the full story and decide for yourself.
