WHIPLASH: Carl Tanner scenes only

The more I watch Whiplash, the more I realize it is about the journey of Nate Lang's character Carl Tanner from innocence to enraged vendetta psycho. Note in how every important scene, Tanner lingers in the background, ghost-like, judging, plotting, waiting for his revenge. Was he just a pawn of Fletcher all along???

Whiplash 2014
Written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Starring J.K. Simmons, Miles Teller, Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist, and Nate Lang.

The actor who played Tanner is an accomplished drummer in real life and trained Miles Teller (Andrew) and J.K. Simmons (Fletcher) for their roles.

The more I watch this movie, the more I am convinced that Tanner would not have left his music career if it hadn't been because of Andrew (and so Ryan). I just say, Tanner was a steady member until Andrew loses his folder and replaces him.

Don’t forget to turn Neiman’s pages😂😂 Damn

5:10

The panic in Tanner's voice here is straight up palpable. Damn.

I hated Tanner more than Fletcher because he's so much more relatable. A true psycho maniac like Fletcher is rare, but everyone knows a passive aggressive jerk like Tanner. Fletcher at least had moments where he was humane and encouraging to Andrew. Tanner was a complete and utter prick every time Andrew interacted with him.

You forgot the little clip where Tanner is shown giving a hateful look when Fletcher berates Neiman telling him he only made it to Studio Band because he misplaced the folder.

best part is at 6:27 after Niemann takes his place. The camera has a cymbal going right through Tanner's face (symbolically cutting his head off) as Niemann keeps hitting the cymbal right in his face.

I never noticed how unimpressed Tanner looks from watching Miles, while seeming nervous.

I know Miles Teller isn't actually a band drummer but damn, despite Andrew supposedly being better; Tanner looks 10x more comfortable than Neiman does.

I think Tanner confuses Alternate with slave

I actually really liked him as an actor. This was a good opening rival , from the favorite to being nearly forgotten near the end. :(
I would enjoy seeing more of him in the future!

I find it hilarious how surprised Tanner was when Fletcher demoted him from being the band’s core drummer after Andrew pulled off a more impressive performance than him and literally saved them to secure their chances in winning first place in the competition

Like what the hell did you expect?
