It makes me furious how people only blame Bratz/Barbie for warping a kids perception. When the REAL issue was movies and tabloids. What they said about Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are the first that come to mind
I first watched The Devil Wears Prada on DVD while being treated inpatient for Anorexia and it was astounding to me that the staff thought it was an appropriate movie to have in a treatment centre
I’m gonna be so real, I never noticed Regina gains weight in Mean Girls. Like I knew that’s what was supposedly happening but upon my very first watch of the movie I didn’t know the bars were working until the sweatpants scene. She looks so skinny even when she’s “fat”
This topic is exactly why the argument “it’s just a movie/tv show/etc, it’s not that deep” is stupid. For YEARS I was convinced I was obese because I was a size 8, and it is media like this directly led to my ED.
This traumatized a generation. Not just movies but TV shows also were promoting fat phobic behaviour and never treated it seriously. It's so sad because of a lot of people got ED's from this, yet you never heard that talked about in these movies and shows, I just remember Blair from Gossip Girl having hers shown in not even a full episode and they never talked about it or brought it up again, so concerning.
The gaslighting into thinking these women were fat is insane to me! Super unhealthy watching all of these as a kid and thinking there was something wrong with my size
Andi being considered fat in the devil wears prada is crazy because to me, all the actors in the movie look like they'd fit into the same dress.. lmao 😂
Edit: same thing with all the cheerleaders, they all look the same to me lol
That scene where the injured Emily is at the hospital and she’s finally gorging/feeding herself properly was insane cuz it’s also being played for laughs but I kinda wish they had done something more with it ,but alas I heard this movie is deep parody commentary of how absurd the fashion world is so 🤷
I was a fashion model in the early 00's (I'm 5'10 and was under 100 lbs and was told by my agency that I needed to lose an inch off of my hips and that I was "too hippy") and that triggered over a decade of severe anorexia (purging/restricting type) 3 stints in long term intensive inpatient and residential treatment, and now I'm on dialysis for kidney failure and have to eat through a tube even after 14 years of recovery because of my lifelong ED that destroyed my modeling career and my life. The horrible way they treated women and talked about our bodies in the early 00s literally was killing us....and now Gen Z is trying to bring it back... thanks to this, plus ozempic ads blowing up my channel, my recovery has really been hanging on by a thread lately. I'm literally in organ failure, and I'm still struggling, and it all started for me 25 years ago but nothing has changed 😢
I’m a size 6 and I definitely would be considered “ fat “ then. I remember when I was a kid and teen in the 2000’s and early 2010’s, I will never forget when a girl in my school went up to me and told me she wished she was my size and then turned around and talked down on her size when she was a size 6 maybe size 8 at most and looked amazing. I was a size 0 then because I had a high metobalism and it’s crazy I was being complimented for being really skinny. I’m happy to be a size 6 now. I work out 4 days week and I love my shape.
It's hard watching films like "Bridget's Jones' Diary" or "Love Actually" nowadays, and seeing the heroines, who are of average size, being constantly fat shamed. In the latter case, the Prime Minister seems notably confused by this, and it was apparently a Jab at how the media viewed Martine McCutcheon's weight at the time.
You missed the whole point of the fact that she is celebrating being a size 4 AS SHE IS DESCENDING INTO THE PERSON SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BE. We're SUPPOSED TO BE HORRIFIED about it. It's supposed to be a sad remark about how far she's fallen. If stuff like that DIDN'T happen in the movie, the ending where she walks away wouldn't be fulfilling or mean anything.
That's like saying 'wow, the villain is being so mean, he's not enlightened at all'.
Like... seriously?! Is media literacy completely dead??
These movies were meant to be satirical. At the time, we were becoming more and more judgmental of the fashion/Hollywood stick-thin beauty standard. We laughed at these movies because we understood the ideals were absurd. That said, we policed our bodies back then like we police our politics now. I am happy to see the broadening of the beauty standard, but I think times are worse now overall. People are obsessing over every little part of their body these days and spending so much money on upkeep. I can't imagine how rough it must be to grow up today.
Dolls didn't make me hate my body, the tabloids were honestly more damaging. And to this day, I hate it when tabloid make fun of a celebrity for gaining weight and making fun of celebrities for doing something to thier body in response to the bullying. Like when a celebrity gets botched after being bullied for years about their appearance. I hate tabloids as much as I hate the paparazzi.
