My mother Daisy used to make the most incredible suet puddings.....She would roll out the pastry then line the inside of a pudding basin then fill it with meat or apple and seal it with another layer of suet pastry over the top. She covered the entire top with grease proof paper which had a fold in it to allow for the pudding to rise. The paper lid was held in place by string being tied around the outer rim of the basin. It was then steamed for 2 hours and 30 mins. The Apple pudding was eaten with golden syrup and custard and the meat pudding with veg and gravy...... Nothing has ever tasted better.  Daisy was born 1903.....

Thanks for this. My Nan used to make what we called Bacon Pud, using whole rashers, onions and then she sprinkled Paxo sage & onion stuffing mix over it, before rolling it up. Wrapped it in old butter wrappers, she bound it tightly in a cloth before somehow suspending with string it over a large pan of boiling water with the lid tightly sealed. Served with mashed spuds and baked beans. Any leftovers were fried up in dripping for breakfast the next day. Food of Kings! ❤ 😋

When I had my first child 31 years ago I ordered bacon roll for dinner in the hospital thinking it would be bacon, in a roll. How wrong was I? Instead I got this magnificent meal! Was the best thing ever and I've never been able to find a recipe for it! Now here it is! Thank you I will be making this

We had loads of suet dishes growing up, clootie dumplings, mince and doughballs and for pudding, jam roly poly which we kids called "dead man's leg" !
We also got the Onion Johnny, I think they were from Brittany, long strings of onions braided with raffia ?
We also had an Italian guy on a sort of bicycle/wheelbarrow cross that sharpened our kitchen knives !
My wife's avoiding carbs just now, but I'm getting some Atora tomorrow !

We had an onion man when I was a child also out neigbour was the green grocery with a horse and cart. We used to feed the horse.  Beautiful memories. From Dagenham UK

My late Dad made bacon 🥓 suet pudding with whatever bacon we had, but didn’t pre-cook it. He just rolled the bacon up inside the suet pastry, which he rolled out, using a glass jar, as we didn’t have the luxury of a rolling pin and cooked it in our gas oven. In those days bacon was sold freshly sliced to the requirements of each customer. I loved whatever he made as it was always so tasty.

Wow, im going to make this, looks gorgeous. Remember my gt grandma making this with cabbage mash and gravy. We used to have "the onion man". We lived in canterbury and had a friend that worked at dover docks, he said they used to come over on the ferry. Always wished we had a photo of them. Im actually going to google them now 😉oh the memories are flooding back. Thankyou xx

Hello although I am relatively young I am OBSESSED with WW2 food so as soon as I saw the title I clicked on it.Firstly what a lovely lady you are with the most charming and soothing voice I could listen to you all night and probably will as I’ve just subscribed !!!! Suet meat pudding. Syrup or jam pudding with custard. Dumplings floating on a thick vegetable and meat stew. Crispy dumplings with cheese cooked in the oven. I have it in the cupboard during the winter months. You can make smaller portions easily too.

I used to make bacon & onion roll. Roll out the suet pastry add the bacon & onion to the top then  roll it up like a swiss roll, cover in foil and bake in the oven. The outside would be crispy and the inside fluffy and light. Delicious

My dad used to get vegetables from the club.
He would go out for a pint down the club, and bring back boxes/ bags of vegetables from his friends allotments.

I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s in London and our local greengrocers always had onions. One of dad’s favourite meals was liver and onions. Mum used to make cheese and onion tarts. She wasnt a fan of suet puds, but fortunately for us her sister was and kept us supplied with roly poly’s and jam suet puddings. Happy days. 😊

My uncle used to make this pudding when I was younger and I loved it! I want some tight now actually.
