Guthrie's golden rule for rhythm playing: 'When I'm singing, don't be noodling on your guitar'.

What is the hardest habit for guitar players to break when playing in a band?

@thenoodler 1 year ago

Once you start watching Guthrie’s lessons you start to realize there’s more to guitar than just memorizing someone else’s songs. He’s probably the best guitar teacher I’ve ever learned from.

Being named “Guthrie” feels like boosting your guitar skills for some reason 😂

"This guitar is a lightning rod for relationships." Wisdom. This interview is like a manual on how to do it. Thank you.

“99% of people who try to become professional musicians fail.’ I was a professional musician for 10 yrs (drumming)..played Red Rocks, shared stage w David Byrne and St. Vincent, had a few records on Jello Biafra’s label…by many standards that may be the ultimate goal and I’m glad for the exp. But it was not MY music I was playing…I did not have a voice in the creative process so for me that doesn’t count. In a way I’m kind of glad I got that stuff out of the way. My idea of success is to have someone other than myself want to actually hear my own compositions and choose to listen to it…not because they are my friend or know me…but because they WANT to hear THAT music, given their millions of other options. To me that would be success.

He just told my life story. Started professionally in 1967 at 16 in Florida, dropped out of school at 17 and NEVER had a plan B. I made a living in music till today, still playing at 75 in 2025. Everything Guthrie says is absolute truth. If you can NOT play and be OK with that, just do something else, because it's a tough life, and its only HAVING to play that will keep you going. It isn't about fame or fortune. it's about music and being who you are.

As a professional chef for the last 25 years (and never worked in the corporate sector) this interview resonates incredibly. Work hard at your craft.

He can say he doesn't use music theory, but he is using it in this entire video. At the 1:24:00 mark, he demonstrates a Major 3 chord in the key of E, where he thinks of it as a "Five to the One". Then over that 5, he plays what he calls the "Dominant scale" over that G# Dom chord, which is just the mixolydian mode, then he comes down the C# minor scale.

I think that he thinks music theory is this rigid thing where if "I am in E major, then I can never move from E major, I must only use the diatonic chords of E major and anything outside of E major I am now destroying the entire concept of music theory". He has a introduction level understanding of music theory, but a graduate level USE of music theory.

He is just playing over chord changes, meaning instead of sticking to a single diatonic key, one can play the scale associated with the type of chord being played. He can say that he's not using music theory, but he absolutely is. Just because you've rebranded music theory, doesn't mean it is something new.

Using different terminology to describe modes and chord changes doesn't mean you aren't using music theory. The Nashville number system IS music theory with its own shorthand.

Thank you for this interview. Giving your guests adequate space to speak and complete their thoughts is priceless.

Guthrie represents this town better than anyone; coolest of dudes.

@softls 1 year ago

He clearly knows theory at a high level but thinks of "music theory" as a rule set instead of just a way to describe things, theory is just learning to label things in a way you can communicate to other people. basic theory shows you what is common but never makes a rule out of it. either way, he is definitely 100% correct that you need your ears to understand what you are doing regardless of theory so no discredit to him and his approach. super positive guy and a great player!

Anyone else that follows Guthrie want to see an interview with his uncle!

I was fortunate to get to spend some time with Leon Rhodes (house guitarist at the Opry for 42 years and played on Hee Haw for 22 years) before he passed away and he told me that he didn’t know music theory and that he just played whatever was under his fingers- He said that no matter how far out there he got in his playing that he always knew how to bring it home. I didn’t understand what he was saying at the time but am beginning to understand what he meant.

I thought this was going to be a lecture on targeting intervals of chords not a seminar full of wisdom bombs. So much great knowledge and inspiration here - this channel is gold. We live in the golden era of content being accessible to us. There's no excuse not to improve.

You have an amazing gift of letting the person you’re interviewing actually talk. And I also absolutely love the lines of questioning you bring up. Not all the cliché crap about what was your first guitar. Talking about things like what did success look like for you are just very open and questions that let the artist talk. And this man likes to talk. Ha ha. Great job really great job.
