Berlin, 1926. The German Ministry of Education receives the proofs of a philosophy book.
They need them to decide whether a 40-year-old professor deserves a professorship in Marburg. The ministry reviews them and returns them with a one-word verdict: Insufficient. The professor was Martin Heidegger, and that book was 'Being and Time,' which is now considered probably the most important philosophy book of the 20th century.
Heidegger forever changed the way we think about existence, death, anxiety, and time. He promised two parts of this text, published a third, and never wrote the rest. And what is it about? The simplest and most difficult question there is: We all understand when someone says, "the table is brown" or "I am happy," but what if we ask ourselves what that "is" means? What does it mean to be?...
We have spent 2,500 years trying to answer this question, and Heidegger argues that nothing less than who we are is at stake in this forgotten question.
What is existence? Why is it that only those who accept their finitude, their death, can truly live their lives?
This year, 50 years after his death, why talk about him? Heidegger was a seismograph of our time; he predicted the disenchantment and disconnection of human beings in a world increasingly dominated by technology and calculating thought. His philosophy is not just another theory, but a jolt that challenges us to ask whether we are truly living our lives or simply "functioning" within them.
Adrián Aranda, Santiago de Arteaga, and Miguel Pastorino discuss the topic on #LaMesaDeFilósofos (The Philosophers' Table).
