Giant house spiders are some of the biggest and fastest spiders you can find in British homes, but should you actually be worried about them?

In this video, I take a closer look at the giant house spider. Why they appear indoors, why they seem far more common in autumn, how big they can get, how fast they are, the webs they make, and whether they are dangerous to people.

Britain is also home to other impressive large spiders, including the cardinal spider and the rare fen raft spider. But which species is actually Britain’s biggest spider?

My Nan (I miss her, RIP Nan) used to always drape a towel over the side of the bath into the tub to allow any spiders to get out.

I have loads of spiders in my house in Norfolk: Giant house spiders, mouse spiders, false widows, cellar spiders, etc. I leave them be, as we have a good understanding: They stay off the floor and I stay off the ceiling.

These are pretty much the only spiders I am terrified of. I can often ignore most other spiders and let them be, but this is the one that keeps me up all night if I haven't disposed of it after seeing it.

My incredible fear of these things just turns the encounter to a simple it was either me or the spider. In the words of Big Smoke: "You picked the wrong house fool!"

Good idea for a channel 4 documentary - Britain’s Biggest Spider. They follow him for a week to learn his routine and interview his friends and family. He’s challenged on whether his obsession with being a big spider is healthy. He says it’s a choice he’s made but he doesn’t encourage his children to be as big. It’s fine to be a medium spider in Britain.

Shared my bedroom with a few giant house spiders over the years. One particular big one liked to bask in the light of my bedside lamp. At certain places a huge intimidating shadow from this spider would be cast onto my wall! Horrifying when unexpected and strangely so frequent it felt intentional!!!!!
