John & Andrew hit the dancefloor for one of the most iconic '80s movies of ALL TIME giving their Reaction, Recap, Analysis, Breakdown, Commentary, & Spoiler Review!!

Footloose (1984) Full Movie Reaction, Breakdown, Commentary & Spoiler Review! — with hosts Andrew Gordon & John Humphrey diving into the iconic dance-driven classic that turned rebellion, rhythm, and teenage freedom into one of the most beloved films of the 1980s.
Directed by Herbert Ross (Steel Magnolias, The Turning Point), Footloose stars Kevin Bacon (A Few Good Men, Mystic River) in a career-making role as Ren McCormack, a city kid who moves to the small town of Bomont — where dancing and rock music have been banned following a tragic accident. What follows is a clash of generations, beliefs, and self-expression as Ren challenges the town’s rigid rules and inspires its youth to reclaim joy through movement.
Andrew & John break down the movie’s most iconic moments: Ren’s explosive warehouse dance sequence, the tension-filled town council debates, the emotional conflict with Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow — Dexter, The Crown), the complicated romance with Ariel (Lori Singer), and the unforgettable final prom that proves joy and discipline don’t have to be enemies. They also highlight the film’s legendary soundtrack — featuring hits like “Footloose,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” and “Almost Paradise” — which became inseparable from the movie’s legacy.
The discussion explores how Footloose balances youthful rebellion with empathy, presenting authority figures who are flawed but human, and a story that champions expression without dismissing responsibility. Andrew & John reflect on why the film remains a pop-culture staple decades later — blending heart, music, and movement into a timeless celebration of freedom.

I love Dianne Weist’s character so much. She has to be quiet and subdued, deferential in her role as a preacher’s wife, and so her own grief and emotions take a backseat as well. We barely acknowledge that it was her boy who died too, that she has her own grief as a mom, because Cleese’s grief swallows up their whole house and town.

I enjoy that we get to see how the preacher used to be in those quiet, kind, sensible moments and through Ariel’s love for him. She is lost as a person, because he was her anchor, and he shut himself off. I can see how this man who loved good discussion and had such an open heart, raised this strong, confident girl who isn’t afraid to break rules.

Starlord: "Is Footloose still the greatest movie in history"?

It was.

The scene when they play chicken on the tractors, that’s on my grandpa’s farm and at our rival high school!

One of the best movie soundtracks ever.

Kevin Bacon said the original ending to this movie bombed with test audiences, it was this lame slow-mo glitter dance. So they hauled everyone back almost a year later to reshoot a hyped-up prom scene with pros & breakdancing

I loved this reaction so much. Not only your appreciation for some of the shots. Mainly that you, especially John really understood the complexity of what the story is about. People often write this off as 80s cheese but it really is very layered. thank you

Ren's mom was played by the legendary Frances Lee McCain, who made a career out of playing moms in iconic 80s movies - she also played Billy's mom in Gremlins, Gordie's mom in Stand By Me, and Lorraine's mom in Back to the Future. In the 90s she was Tatum and Dewey's mom in Scream. She's actually only 14 years older than Kevin Bacon, he was just playing much younger than his actual age.

Watching this as an older person now, it seems like Lithgow’s character had kids so young (actor was 38 when this was released) he was afraid he couldn’t protect them. So he’s trying to protect the entire youth community from the pain of his son’s death. Pretty great writing since that’s not explicitly featured in the dialogue.

As a teenager this was part of the soundtrack of my life. Man I really miss the 80's or maybe just being young. Thank you for this one guys.

24:51, speaking of outsiders, the movie "The Outsiders" is a movie worth watching.

I had always heard of this one. I always heard the preacher was unreasonably evil for being against dancing. I was shocked to find a very layered character piece hidden by popular culture.

It's so great to get a good old fashioned John and Andrew movie reaction ❤ I love that Footloose is the choice. It's a lot deeper than people give it credit for.

@Tanstaafl_74 8 months ago (edited)

This was my era. They did not exaggerate a thing. If anything, they downplayed it because Hollywood wouldn't let them talk like we did in the movie. The "we're going to die soon" actions, that was all accurate. Also, the dance at the end wasn't just a dance. It was catharsis, a pressure valve being released, it had to happen, or worse things would have.

80s MOVIES WERE F*CKING GREAT! So glad I lived through them.

Incredible soundtrack. And thanks to Andrew & John for reacting so authentically and unironically. So many people who did not grow up the 80’s wouldn’t “get it”. But, it’s actually a really great film with beautiful performances. And, though it’s a product of its time it is still so well written that you can identify with all of the characters by making it relatable and real.

Chris Penn didn't know how to dance. No matter what the choreographer tried to show him it just wasn't happening. So, when the choreographer found out Chris was a wrestler and some kinda martial arts, I forget which style, they incorporated his wrestling and martial arts into his dancing. Most was cut out though.😂😂😂😂
