Gotta say, the kid’s table was a relief for us as kids because we didn’t have to worry about adult landmines in the conversations.

About 2 years before my dad died, he and I were invited to a party with a group of cousins we hadn't met before. The cousin who invited us was wonderful and friendly so we happily went. But when we arrived, we were ignored by almost everyone. The only people who were kind to my dad was the cousin who invited us, his wife and the 4 kids who were there. The kids were nice to me so I sat at their table. We had a great time laughing and telling stories. After dinner, one of the little girls crawled on my lap and fell asleep. That was the 1st time I met her and she trusted me. Two of the women who didn't even introduce themselves to me, were openly jealous and commented on how weird she was behaving. Children like me I said. One of them got defensive and woke the sleeping child to drag her away. I looked for dad and saw he wasn't happy. I asked him if he wanted to leave. He said yes and we quietly left. We didn't hear from any of them again. It was genuinely a horrible night. My heart broke for my dad. He was 91 then. And that's how they treated him. Just bc people are family, doesn't make them good people.

This tale hits home for me. My 1 year younger brother was favored throughout my childhood. First major slap I got was when my folks did not attend my high school graduation, when I was salutatorian, because of something my brother did. Throughout the years I've been completely excluded from family events, family news. I made my own life on my own, choosing friends as my family. At age 71 I have been content to write my burial wishes, no visitation, no service. I don't need anyone to "pay respect" when I am dead when they can't do it while I'm alive.

I know that feeling. At my Aunt and Uncle's anniversary party my Mom and Grandmother were at the head table as they were at the original wedding. My cousins and spouses were at a long table. Their children, seven of them, seated at a table across the aisle from the adults. Guess where I was seated. Yup, at the kids table as the "babysitter". The kids got restless, ran around, threw food at each other. The waitress came over to me to get me know people were complaining and something needed to be done, immediately. I smiled at her. Pointed to the opposite table and calmly said "Well, then you'd best tell their parents. I'm not the babysitter."
A friend of my Aunt and Uncle, Lily, came over to my table and sat across from me. She smiled, patted my hand and said "Well played."
It didn't solve anything but I didn't care. Oh, did I mention I was 24 at the time.

I was proud she walked out. Good deal! She went home where she is the adult she knows she is. I’m the youngest in my family too. I was married, but at family gatherings do you think they’d acknowledge my husband and I had a big successful business where we traveled all over the USA and had a great time. They acted like it was that little thing we did for fun. We earned great money and had fun doing it. They acted like it was nothing. We went and paid cash for our cars and trucks for our business. Like there was something wrong with that.

Savannah was an idiot for allowing them back in. This is pure fiction, because people like that family DO NOT CHANGE. EVER. They will double down, and do everything they can to exclude, exclude, exclude - all the while increasing the attempts at manipulation to get her back under their thumb. They learned that she was successful, so dollar signs hit them. THAT'S why they're pretending to love her at the end.

Mom at least admitted that she wasn't sure that change was possible. She at least admitted to Savannah how things are eventually going to work out.
