As someone who lacks theological training I surely don’t always appreciate the deeper significance of some of these discussions,but enjoy listening to them and being challenged.  As a scientist, I absolutely appreciate the importance of clarity in defining/using terms.

My thoughts regarding the comments around the 10:00 mark. When I was first reading into theology coming from a non-nomination background looking at Catholicism, this was a point made by Scott Hahn. In Scott’s testimony (specifically in his Pints With Aquinas conversation) he talked about his “mind blowing revelation when reading the church fathers” and that the question of the atonement was “Luther versus Aquinas. Penal substitution versus vicarious satisfaction.”

How ironic is it that he could never actually look into the Lutheran tradition yet, he became Roman Catholic. He left the reformed tradition for all the reasons I never joined it, yet he joined Catholicism for all the reasons I joined Lutheranism. At the end of the day, he took the faults of reformed theology and impressed them on all historic protestant theology. In that podcast, he even admits that the history of the pope doesn’t line up and then when he magically found Matthew 16, somehow that fixed it.

I for one found his explanation of vicarious satisfaction quite compelling. I never saw how that was supposed to make me Roman Catholic.

The response I almost routinely get from [half-educated] EO-apologists online typically involves them assuming  at some point in the conversation that I’ll eventually convert to the Orthodox Church. They’re always SO confident of this and, quite frankly, it’s really freaking arrogant and demeaning. It’s like the idea that I could ever have a rational and perfectly valid objection to Eastern Orthodoxy is unthinkable. Noooo, if I raise some issues and get some questions answered, I’m gonna have to convert. I’m sorry, but that’s an automatic RED FLAG for me, thank you very much.

It seems that some online Eastern Orthodox polemicists love to engage in assumptions about the down stream implications of theological belief statements of other traditions without giving due deference to how those traditions actually work out the implications of their own beliefs.
