Finally! Some one explains microbes! I hear microbs from everyone and no one breaks it down for the regular person. You are great!

I'm a functional Medicine practitioner and I talk about good and bad bacteria in the gut daily. Glad to hear it on a compost video!!!

Problem 2- I've composted all kinds of stuff including whole chickens, salmon carcasses, bones etc. You are absolutely correct in stating that it has to be HOT and placed in the CENTER! We have bears in Anchorage (anc bear tracker) and we have to be very careful. Didn't even attract a cat. I wouldn't use used motor oil, however. The bones crumble after being in the center of a 150F pile for a couple months.

Okay one thing to note about aneorobic microbes/bacteria. You can still use it in your garden, but ideally in very small amounts, as it works more like a soil prebiotic. The aerobic compost + microbes are the probiotic. The aneorobic is like a prebiotic that feeds the probiotic if used in small amounts.

You and your dad are definitely the king of composing 👍🏽

I know this is may be a silly request, but could you demonstrate in a future video exactly how you flip your compost with this method?

I must admit that after watching you and your father's composting videos and putting them into action, I have more earthworms in my soil than I have ever seen. Being in North Alabama in a heavy clay soil I am impressed with how compost fixes the soil in my garden. I am yet to master an 18 day compost but my garden is my back yard so I am not in a rush. I have 5 layers and use the coop and run wheat straw along with grass clippings and comfrey from your fathers farm. I can usually get the compost right in 30-35 days and that is good enough for me. Thanks so much for your continued effort to educate us on permaculture.

Finally, someone who acknowledges size matters.

Problem 5- Completely over target- been there done that, including the rolling ball and the carbon filter on the countertop. Yuck! Again, just get a big pile of wood chips, place your greens in the middle and cover with plastic. If you live in a cold climate, place chunks of scrap foam on TOP of the VBL to conserve heat, just like homes are built- VBL on the warm side of the insulation. I wouldn't do it in Texas, it might catch on fire (>180F temps). Yes, no weeds- place them in the center of the hot pile- kills any weed seeds in a matter of minutes. Comment on Charles Dowding- the cardboard on the sides of the pile is important as it serves as a somewhat porous vapor barrier. I say no structure whatsoever as it gets in the way of turning. This is a great video, thank you!

Thanks for that good point "not to pee when your on medication".

You said old used engine oil but i think you meant cooking oil

😢 Been using city water, hadn't thought of that...

Guys, it works even with much lower volumes. One of my composters is from leftover concrete well ring. It's less than 80cm in diameter and 40cm tall. In your measurement units it's around 30 inches in diameter and 15 inches tall. Total volume is 200L or 1/4 cubic yard or 4 times lower than "the minimum".
It works every time, reaching the desired temperatures and producing excellent compost and I load and harvest from it 6 times a year - 5 times hot and 1 time cold compost.

You just came acroos my féed. It only took 30 seconds to decide to subscribe😊

I bought one of those tumblers a few years ago because I didn't know anything about composting, it had good reviews, and they talked about how easy it was. So for years I struggled to make compost without any luck. I put stuff in it almost every day and turned it every few days for years. The manufacturer and YouTuber talked about how you could easily have compost in much less time. So for years I thought it was me who just couldn't get the ratio right and I was constantly frustrated with the mess that came out of this thing. Now I find out the thing is basically a scam and isn't worth a shit!  I am happy that I found your channel and you put my misery to an end. Thanks for the great, easy to understand video. Now I'm curious because I don't produce near as much vegetation as you have. Can I still make this work? I might have a half gallon of kitchen scraps every few days. I have a little less than an acre of land. I usually mulch the grass when I cut it, but I suppose I could bag it. Another problem I have is that I have nutsedge in my garden and it's taking over. I think it came from my poor quality compost. If anyone has a suggestion, I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks for this! Free, planet saving information. Keep making the internet great. 😀

Problem 3- Pieces that aren't yet broken down isn't a problem- it helps keep the pile aerobic, even when covered with poly sheet. I get a ton of red wrigglers that collect on the underside of the sheet. They find the ideal microclimate in the pile- temperature and humidity. If the pile is a bit dry, they will congregate on the underside of the poly vapor barrier where the moisture condenses.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that with an excess carbon woodchip pile, covered with a poly VBL sheet, you will notice that the wood chips above a buried nitrogen source will turn fuzzy. This is because the nitrogen rich material denitrifies into ammonia/ NOX gases which are driven outwards and  converted to aqueous ammonia/nitrates when they are stopped by the plastic vapor barrier. These forms of nitrogen then enable fungi to flourish when they mix with the carbon in the woodchips. I've witnessed this countless times in my piles. Without the barrier, these gases would be lost to the atmosphere.

Got a  glimpse of food growing in a bed to the right of the screen.

This is the best composting video ever!! Thank you for being so thorough! God bless you young man
