Rest is essential and very hard to come by in this society for so many people. But also! You have to take stock in how you show up in your relationship, house, or community, and actively work to do what you can to show up for others whenever and wherever you can.

Accept help when needed, but you have to extend offers of help to avoid exploiting your loved ones. Show up how you can, when you can.

When I hear "lazy unmotivated" I immediately think of all the people who are depressed but undiagnosed.   Which is super common in areas where mental health care is hard to get.  They are always blamed for failing.

On the "Lazy Lesbians segment", I agree way more with Sheria. Most people in general are just trying to survive. If as many people were as "lazy" as some like to claim, the economy wouldn't be constantly moving forward as it is. Most people literally can't afford to be "lazy" or mfers can't pay their bills or end up homeless. And that still doesn't stop landlords from evicting people anyway.

Our ideas of "lazy" isn't independent of what we're taught by society and in media. Our individual ideas don't exist in a vacuum. No one is immune to propaganda. It doesn't matter how much of a hard-core progressive, leftist commie you claim to be, your worldview is still shaped by your cultural environments and media intake. We need to be more critical and reflective of what we consider lazy and why that is, and most of that is rooted in capitalism. Ruling class needs an active labor force to make money, and labeling certain people as "lazy" helps attach stigma.

Really interesting discussion, I agree that that girl wasn’t clear enough on her message. First thing I thought was lazy HOW, what do you mean lazy exactly? Because if you’re being vague like that then people are forced to assume you mean the most common concept, and just describing people as lazy AND losers does nothing to paint a nuanced picture in the first place, ‘loser’ is hardly nuanced at all lol. Also having no motivation doesn’t read lazy to me personally, if you’re down on your luck, if you’re burnt out, if you have low self esteem, if you’re feeling mentally drained or physically ill, if you feel your network isn’t supportive, if you don’t feel loved, and yes if you have depression, you naturally do not feel motivated. Even men who are raised to end up getting their wives to do everything for them, (I don’t know maybe I’m being too kind in this train of thought!!) I feel like if they somehow learned to love themselves beyond what toxic masculinity feeds them, if they learned to love their partners and see them as equal, if they felt supported and happy in themselves, I feel like they would be very different people, motivated people. In my opinion yes one can be lazy and it’s not the end of the world to judge someone for being lazy (in my mind meaning lacking motivation AND empathy, as in you don’t do something even though it’s a need for yourself and others, for example a messy roommate) but laziness is a symptom of some need not being met. Hopefully that was clear, I’m not going to make a list of everyone who doesn’t count as lazy who therefore should not be judged and who I don’t want to offend because I’m going to trust this little corner of the internet can read and make use of context ahahahah It was really cool to see you both really defend your side and disagree on things but still try and understand each other, much more engaging than just seeing two people agreeing and moving on without getting into the meat of things.

Thank you aunties for showing respectful exploration of a difference of opinion. We all need to get better at bravely navigating differences in our close relationships….. then maybe we can try that with others.

Loved to hear yalls thoughts and opinions!! I think some people take more time to learn discipline and how to care for themselves. That doesn't mean that anyone should allow themselves to be taken advantage of by that person who is still learning these tasks. I think we each have a responsibility to take care of ourselves and that includes building healthy reciprocal & supportive relationships not exploitative ones, taking space to work on ourselves individually and with friends or family, and having access to community resources like internet, libraries, parks, food drives and community activities in an ideal world

Going back to the roommates' thing: Yes, you should feel bad for the roommates that never learned to take care of themselves. They basically tried to exploit you to do the labor their parents did for them. I'm sure now they've either 1) learned to take care of themselves or 2) are exploiting the people they currently live with. IDK maybe we call them exploitative people. It seems like a heavy word but maybe thats what those people need to hear to change themselves and stop exploiting people.
