Maybe paving an even bigger parking lot would work 🧐

"Extreme levels of corpo simping" is certainly some next level technical analysis.

The Queens site they got kicked out of ended up as a Costco. Same warehouse, same cheap stuff in bulk, just a better reputation. Being liked really is an asset.

I work at that Walmart in Valley Stream, literally feet away from the NYC line. (I live in Queens.) It is part of the expansive Green Acres shopping complex, which features many other big-name stores. The road that leaves the shopping complex has four lanes; three of the lanes turn left to go into NYC, and one of the lanes turns right to go to the rest of Long Island. The Walmart is always stuffed, even at 7 in the morning. My management told me that it has the most revenue of any Walmart, and I believe them. (According to a banner on the wall, they had over $300 million in sales last year.)

Living 10 mins away on foot from a costco makes a difference in nyc

When you see how missarable they did in Germany, it is not surprising. In fact, the only surprising thing is how they are still allowed to run this store.

If you really want to go to Walmart and live in NYC, long island is a short drive away. Them being in NYC at this point is unnecessary.

Also online shopping is a thing.

Not sure why people seem pissy about the introduction and the Walmart financial background. I thought it was super interesting

Might want to look into costco's effect on local economies. They tend to have positive effects on small businesses.

I remember going to the Valley Stream store (in Green Acres mall) tons after it opened. I was in the mall proper (working at JCPenney) that Black Friday when people were trampled to death. And yes, the reason they can't get into the city proper is because they're so hated. The city rolled out the red carpet and PAID for Home Depot and IKEA to move into Red Hook, completely sanitizing one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn. But, from what I hear, even with all the stores bailing from the city due to organized shoplifting rings and the city's limp wristed response and punishment of such things, they still won't let Walmart in.

Wonder what Walmart was asking from the city to go there. They are kinda notorious for asking for tax breaks…

Completely under-crediting the value a costco brings to a surrounding area. They have shown time and time again that their stores boost local economies and small businesses with "quality" goods in bulk at fair prices. The small businesses can and do take advantage of what costco offers to make more specialized products with higher quality, readily available, and fair priced ingredients.

K-mart also had stores in NY City, including in Manhattan (3) until they collapsed and they were not much better on pay and labor treatment as Walmart. They were also based near Detroit, MI, a heavily union state. Target also has a relatively better rep as to its labor relations, marketing and based near Minneapolis. Walmart is based in NW Arkansas, far from any major city (St. Louis, OK City, Kansas City, Dallas are the closest at 100's of miles away) and based in a very anti-union, anti-labor state and the 'south' in general.

Another great and informative video! It's always seemed odd to me that Walmart had no presence in the city while Target etc do; learning of the history and politics behind it was really interesting.

Where can you even squeeze a Walmart sized facility in NYC?! There so little room!

I’m from White Plains in Westchester and until 2019, there was a Walmart in the city center, and that was the closest Walmart that you can get to on the Metro North. Lots of people from the Bronx used to take the bus and then come up to White Plains to buy their Walmart stuff and then go back. Now the closest Walmart to my house is either in Norwalk or Mohegan Lake.
