Did the Reformation misunderstand Paul?
NT Wright has spent decades arguing that some of Christianity’s most familiar ideas about salvation and justification are not quite what the apostle Paul was actually saying.
James White strongly disagrees.
In this classic Unbelievable? encounter, two heavyweight Christian thinkers clash over justification by faith, grace, works, imputed righteousness and whether Protestants have been reading Paul through the wrong theological lens.
Wright argues that Paul’s real framework is covenant, resurrection, new creation and the family of Abraham. White presses him on the question at the heart of the Reformation: if our final justification is connected to the life we live, is grace still sufficient?
The debate becomes especially intense around Romans 2, Romans 4 and 2 Corinthians 5:21.
Did Luther and the Reformers ask the wrong questions of Paul?
Is Christ’s righteousness really imputed to believers?
Can final judgment involve our works without becoming salvation by works?
And does NT Wright’s reading clarify the gospel, or fundamentally change it?
Featuring NT Wright, James White and host Justin Brierley.
