Against All Odds: One Man's Escape From a Scottish Mountain

Scotland's Mountains

Scotland's Mountains

In December 1942, a Vickers Wellington bomber disappeared over the Scottish Highlands during a navigation training flight.

The aircraft eventually crashed into the slopes of Geal Chàrn, near Ben Alder, killing five of the six men on board.

But one man survived.

Sergeant Philip Edward Underwood, the rear gunner, was badly injured but somehow made his way out of the mountains. He spent the night at the crash site before beginning his descent the following day, eventually reaching the Corrour estate.

I head to this area and try my best to retell the story of survival. I also discuss how remote these mountains are and also make a bit of an error early on.

In memory of those who didn't survive.

F/O James William Heck (25), Pilot, RAAF.
Sgt Maurice Hutt (21), Obs. / Bomb Aimer, RAFVR.
Sgt William Ernest Riley (22), Navigator, RAF.
Sgt Joseph Towers (25), Navigator, RAFVR.
Sgt James Hemmings, W/Op / Air Gnr., RAFVR.
