Everything Under the Sun - Episode 61
On the evening of May 31, 1985, an F-4 tornado formed and plowed up and down the mountains of Western and Central Pennsylvania for about 70 miles, downing 90,000 trees in a path nearly two-thirds of a mile wide, causing complete destruction of the forest and any structures in-between. The next morning, my motorcycle riding buddy and I headed out about 7 o’clock in the morning on our motorcycles, we headed west. About 20 miles from Pittsburgh we ran into road closures with volunteer fireman, waving their arms to go another way. This happened three times down near beaver Falls PA. They kept redirecting redirecting us. Finally, I stopped at one of the road closures and I asked the fireman very impatiently, what’s going on? Is there a parade or something? He looked at me and said where have you been, we’ve had tornadoes go through here and people have died. I didn’t know. So we headed north to get away from the road closures and devastation which happened to be around the Jamesway mall were four people died from the tornado strike.
so we headed north from the Pittsburgh area up towards Newcastle and Sharon, Pennsylvania, and up towards Lake Erie. We started running into road closures again. One of the things we saw, I actually took pictures of it. It was in an Amish community called Albion. Cleared fields from Horizon to Horizon with a small street going down where there were buildings and houses. The tornado could have gone down one of the fields on the left or the right, but it went right down the main street, destroying all the buildings. Where I stopped to take a few photos, there was an Arco barrier wrapped around a Tree I was standing next to. I don’t even know where that came from.
there is a movie —night of the living dead made in the 1960s or 70s by Director George Romero filmed in Evan city Pennsylvania about 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. In the opening scene of that movie, there is a girl in a cemetery, and she ends up being chased by a zombie or a ghoul in that cemetery in Evan city. The tornadoes of May 31, 1985 hit that cemetery and actually removed the lids of some of the crypts and pulled the caskets out of their graves. There was a tavern on Main Street/Route 68 through that small town. Evan city called the grouse house.. my riding buddy and I would stop in there for a hot sausage that the owner would make on his grill behind the bar that was different, it was made with hot sausage, but it was a hamburger patty. In that bar, there is a photo of that tornado that hit that cemetery that one of the locals took. At least there was a photo and it was a center of attention for sometime in the grass house. It has since changed hands and the name, but I wonder if the photo is still hanging on the wall
