im trying to figure out the symbolism of the frankenstein book that kept getting mentioned. harrison and birdy are both messed up because of their mothers and you could argue the same about gabriella (frankenstein - how abandonment or lack of love makes monsters of us all)?? But if thats the case...who is the villain here? is gabby secretly doing this all because of her abandonment issues? is eden actually guilty or was it a lie? whats up with birdy's memory issues? did alice feeney really write a book with no actual answer?

If 90% of the plot twists in a narrative are about how characters are secretly related to each other, that's not a thriller that's a soap opera

I think Alic Feeney just had the idea of a woman coming home and theres another woman pretending to be her and just forced the plot to work around that

I hate when books have POV’s and they’re all omitting crucial information. It makes no sense because we’re reading from their POV which is THEIR thoughts and they just never mention/think about any of these things.
I know that it’s so that the reader will be surprised but it’s so annoying to me.

The story of My Husband's Wife seems to be based on a Japanese folk tale called Don't Come Into Ears. Plot: a rice farmer comes home to find his wife fighting an identical woman in their house. Suspecting that one is a fox in disguise, he asks both women if one will volunteer to fetch a dog from the next village. The woman who refuses must be the fox, since foxes fear dogs. But his wife doesn't like the dog's owner for other reasons, and seems reluctant. She is mistakenly banished, and the man lives with the fox-fake for years, producing two sons with her. One day — SURPRISE! — a brush tail is discovered and the fox confesses her deception. She too is banished. To make amends, this fox chants to the man's rice fields in such a way that the rice fails to flower just when tax inspectors are visiting, then revives, thus boosting his income. (Japanese Folk Tales of Kaga and Noto, Hokkoku Publishing).

What's frustrating is that she never shows us that Eden is a terrible person who nearly murdered a child. She's the first character we're introduced to, we're supposed to feel connected to her. But no even hints of unreliable narrator before her death. We think we're with her solving a mystery, but really she's the villain is a super cool concept, but it was not executed at all here.

The editing of that lil Heated Rivalry boy into this video is killing meeeee. Every time it happens I burst into laughter.

The most shocking part of this book was finding out that Alice Feeney is British. Like so much of the story feels like an American’s interpretation of England, from the village name to the culture, and it’s so hard to believe a Brit wrote it
