Norbert Blüm with stern TV in Qatar: "This country cannot host a World Cup"

"I wish Mr. Blatter would live here for 14 days. Then perhaps he won't award World Cups to countries where such conditions exist. As punishment, I would wish the entire FIFA Executive Committee: six months here!" declared Norbert Blüm during his visit to the World Cup host country of Qatar with stern TV.

On World Cup construction sites, in workers' housing blocks, and in conversations with the affected people, he formed his own opinion about the working and living conditions of the approximately 1.5 million migrant workers. "These are working conditions that are unacceptable. Those who cheer in the stadiums should remember how those stadiums were built." He continued: "The workers here have nothing. They live in extremely cramped conditions. Nothing that belongs to them, no private space. Sanitary conditions are appalling!"

Norbert Blüm also had strong words for FIFA's role: "The football world really can't be proud of this. This is the price for all this bureaucratic posturing."

Regarding the workers' accommodations, he said: "A toilet and shower for the workers, and VIP boxes for Mr. Blatter. Now I ask Mr. Blatter: Is this what he envisioned when he awarded the World Cup to Qatar?"

After his visit to Qatar, Norbert Blüm is convinced: "Here you see people being degraded. Exploited, pushed back into the old slave society. And all this with the help of highly regarded football. A World Cup cannot take place in this country if football itself doesn't want to jeopardize its good reputation."

Since the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar in December 2010, the working and living conditions of the approximately 1.5 million migrant workers have been making headlines.

For months, the editorial team of Stern TV tried unsuccessfully to obtain filming permission for Qatar. Norbert Blüm and the stern TV team traveled to the wealthy desert state as tourists to document the conditions there with a hidden camera.
