In this Blender tutorial, we look at a fast and incredibly efficient workflow to turn a single real-world photo into a low-poly, game-ready 3D asset.
Texturing doesn't need to take hours or require complex node setups. By preparing a single image (fixing perspective and flattening it out in Photoshop, GIMP, or Krita), we can bring it straight into Blender to trace, model, and project the texture directly onto our geometry. This technique is fantastic for indie game developers who need highly performant, low-poly assets that still retain a beautiful, realistic look.

This really makes me want to pick up Blender again.
Previously I got frustrated trying to learn as all the other tutorial/examples were having you make something from pure imagination vs here you use a reference and recreate it.
I feel this method will help me learn basic skills and stay motivated to then build on that base.

1. Texture should be sent into Substance Painter for de-lighting. De-lighting should be done via a dark color layer with "Divide" blend mode. Specular highlights (if any) should be removed using a dark color layer with "Multiply" blend. This is important, because if you plan on use dynamic lights, shadows baked into the image would be visible.
2. SOME removed shadows can be added back to AO map.
3. SOME removed shadows can be added back to a normal map (via height to normal).
4. This whole process (1-3) can be done using Substance Sampler, but working by hand is better.
5. Advanced trick: you can create a small subsection of the model as a high poly mesh, and bake normals from that mesh onto your low poly (with a mask made in Substance Painter). Seriously increases realism.
