It took me waaaay too long to figure out the "clunking" noise as well but once I also replaced my waterpump its so obvious to me now that worn bearing was the culprit all along. Glad Toyota improved the waterpump with as new design from the original.
One thing I did was to simply set the new pump on top of the engine when removing the old one and placing the screws as i removed them into the new one, then swapped and installed one at a time. No mistakes and it went better than expected. I feel so much better this thing was replaced.
Thanks for the video! I like the process you used to pinpoint your issue. We just purchased a 2007 RX 350 and I'm noticing this noise at idle too. We had this happen before on my wife's 2015 Rav4 and it was the water pump too. It started at 40k miles and I changed it at 80k miles once the noise was overbearing. I also wondered how much longer it would have gone with the bad bearing.
Hey. Great video. If you happen to see my comment this much later. I have a question for you. I had my timing belt replaced with full kit. Shortly after this noise started to develop. To this day the noise is absent cold. It seems that as it warms up( maybe 3 minutes, or thermostat opens?) the noise begins. Would you guess that would indicate water pump bearing or the pulley? Thanks
At 14:55 where the bolts of the water pump are shown, looks like the bolts' threads are coated with some material(s) to prevent leaking of coolant. Anyone knows of the material(s) to use? Thank you!
