In 1871 a Prussian king stood in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles and was proclaimed Emperor of Germany. Three hundred and forty-six years earlier, that same crown was nothing but a duchy kneeling in Kraków.

This is the complete story of how Prussia — a minor kingdom with no natural borders, no great wealth, and no obvious future — turned itself into the state that would give its name to modern Germany, and then vanish into the war that nation finally lost.

It begins in 1525, when Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, thirty-four years old, dissolved the very institution he had been chosen to lead and left behind a duchy that was solvent, literate, and at peace. From there the film follows the slow machine that built a kingdom: a Brandenburg countryside collapsing from three hundred thousand people to near seventy-five thousand, the Swedish army crossing from Pomerania in 1675, and the Peace of Saint-Germain in 1679 that forced Frederick William to hand everything back.

We trace Frederick William I taking the throne in 1713 and reversing his father's reign so completely his court needed a week to understand it — leaving behind not a kingdom but an instrument: 83,000 trained men, 8,000,000 thalers in reserve, and a bureaucracy that could carry a war. We follow his son from fleeing the field at Mollwitz in 1741 to attacking frontally again and again until Prussia faced four great powers at once.

Then comes the fall and the recovery: two Prussian armies destroyed in a single day at Jena and Auerstädt, the settlement at Tilsit that made the collapse permanent, Humboldt founding the University of Berlin in 1810 on the idea that knowledge is inquiry, not inheritance, and Blücher's Prussians arriving at Waterloo in the late afternoon to strike the flank.

And finally the quiet weapon no cannon could match — a tariff law, the coal stumbled into at Vienna, 67 of 68 locomotives built in a single year, a customs union Prussia itself had written, and the humiliation at Olmütz in 1850 before the crown at Versailles.

From 55 knights in Kraków to an emperor in the Hall of Mirrors: this is the entire history of the kingdom that built a nation around an army, gave that nation its name, and then disappeared.

💬 Prussia built itself around its army and then vanished into the war that nation lost — do you think a state defined that completely by its military was ever going to survive peace?
