“Sometimes I look up to heaven and ask God: Where were you when I was a child?” With this question, Desiré, a young woman from Barcelona, created one of the most moving moments of the vigil held Tuesday by Pope Leo XIV at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. As she recounted to the Pope during his dialogue with young people, her father tried to kill her mother when she was a child, and her mother was saved because a young man intervened and died. This testimony led the Holy Father to reflect on evil, but especially on forgiveness.
“We must learn to see forgiveness, a powerful medicine against evil that heals our inner wounds, as something that is part of a process, a journey,” the Pope responded to Desiré, although he clarified that forgiving does not necessarily mean returning to the previous situation or rebuilding the relationship with the person who caused the harm. “Forgiving does not mean justifying the wrong suffered or forgetting what happened, but rather preventing that wrong from having the last word in our lives,” he added.
Desiré, visibly moved, had previously explained that she grew up in a family "in a very humble neighborhood of Barcelona" and that, after her father went to prison and her mother fell into drug addiction, she ended up under the guardianship of social services. At just ten years old, she was taken to the San José de la Montaña children's center, where, she says, a process began that would change her life. "Little by little, I experienced family love for the first time," she recalled before the thousands of attendees gathered in Montjuïc.
