What does “Soranji” mean to you?
This song genuinely made me think about life in a way I never had before.
I’d love to hear what this song means to you. ❤

Soranji

This song makes me cry every single time I listen to it 😭 I especially love the parts about making plans for tomorrow even if the world were to end that very day, and continuing to live that way; and about taking life one step at a time and simply cherishing the ordinary day you have today.

What is the reason to keep living, no matter how painful life becomes…? That’s a difficult question.

First of all, we are born into this world without ever choosing to be born. And yet, as we go through life, there come to be people who would be sad if we were gone. So I think that as long as there is even one person who would grieve for me, I have to keep living.

And if someday there were no one left who knew me, but I could still think, “I want my being alive to be of some use to someone,” then I think that would be something truly precious.

It doesn’t have to be anything grand. If you have enough strength to spare, simply reaching out your hand when someone is about to fall can be enough.

And suppose you were living through days that felt like hell. If simply enduring those days and continuing to live could somehow give courage to someone, somewhere… If we could make something like that a reason to keep living, perhaps that is what it means to give our lives meaning. At least, that’s how I think about it.

(There is a scene in the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger that expresses a similar idea, and it really made me think.)

This song was written as the theme song for a war film. It tells the story of people desperately trying to survive, holding on to the hope of returning home to the wives and children they love. It makes me think deeply, once again, about what it means to live.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic bombings in war, and we also experience many natural disasters. Perhaps partly because of this, we have many occasions in our everyday lives that make us think about life and how precious it is.

What is it like in the Netherlands? Do you feel that people there also have many occasions to think deeply about life and what it means to live?
