My grandfather was one of those African that fought the Japanese in Barma and the Italians in Ethiopia. He lost his leg in Barma.

My grandfather was part of the Kings African Rifle from Kenya and lost an eye in the jungles of Burma. Instead of being honored for his service, the British treated him as a 3rd rate citizen after the British White Settlers and Indian Asians, so he took the oath and went into the thick Aberdeere ranges thicket and joined his brothers in the Mau Mau rebellion in the heart of the vast and unforgiving Mt. Kenya forest in 1952. He only emerged after independence from the British in 1964. He hadn't cut his hair and beard for 12 good years! His own father couldn't even recognize him.

I remember when a British documentarian asked Idi Amin about allegations that he eliminated political opponents, he answered thus “You British gave me a medal for killing people I didn’t know and now you criticize me if I kill my enemies”.
Got one hell of a point.

My maternal great grandfather served in Burma. He was born in colonial Nigeria.
As a history lover I appreciate you telling the story of the Africans who fought for the crown.

Great work! Grandfather fought for the KAR and now live in Uganda. It's amazing how the memory and traditions of the KAR still exists here.

Without the troops from the empire Britain would have been defeated long before the USA joined us we owe a great debt of gratitude to them all

My late father was Nigerian - though I was born in London in 1963 and my mother is German - it is good to see this, often neglected piece of WW2 history, being given recognition here. Thank you!

Two of my uncle fought in Burman , both came back . One had PTSD which was not known to anyone then and act like mad man until he dies. But we know it is the effect of the war, the other was able to rebuild his life achieve something for himself and was even interview as part of Aljazeera documentary on the war. Both hate violence and always advise peaceful resolution to conflict and argument . They are very great uncles

Two soldiers, one from each of my parents' families served in the Royal West African Frontier Force, fighting in Burma. Both came back from the war. One was then shot and killed along with two others when attempting to carry a written petition to the governor of the Gold Coast in 1948.

Mate I haven’t even watched this yet but thank you for covering this. As a Nigerian Brit born and raised in the uk this topic often overlooked you’re a legend

Excellent presentation!  I can't praise it enough.  The KAR had a tough go in Burma, and we owe them all our thanks. Regards from Canada 🇨🇦

I know that even today in Nigeria they remember a phrase said by a senior British Officer of their troops who fought fighting the Japanese.
Nigerians soldiers are brave as Lions, and hard as nails.

My grandfather fought in this war out of Uganda, and according to him was at imphal as he was already part of the Kings East african rifles before 1941. He came back with medals, which were later looted by Obote troops during the Ugandan bush war( 1980s).

I knew about Ethiopia and African troops fighting in north Africa and Madagascar but had no idea they thought the Japanese in Burma.  Thanks for telling the wider world. Amazing how many British people don't know or understand the major role empire troops played in  both world wars. Keep up the good  podcasts

'Sweet Banana' is a (former) song of the RAR (now mainly Zimbabwean Commando/SAS) - lyrics quite clearly mention the Burma campaign. Quite a few achive photos to substantiate this...

A Nigerian here. My grandfather, uncles and grand uncles on both my father's and mother's sides, fought in Burma, today's Myanmar.

My Grandfather was 2RWF as such went to Madagascar and then Burma,  his opinion of Afircan soldiers was to NEVER return to British lines through African troops as they didn't particularly ask questions.

In Zambia, one of the local languages call soldiers even in current army.. "Asilikali" (The Askaris) term came from i guess this period.. We also have barracks named  Burma, Chindwin, Molek, Tug Argan, Kohima, Kalewa, Taung Up, Gondar are the major military installations names.

I'm Igbo from Nigeria. I have grand uncles that fought in Burma. They always told their stories.
