For my regular viewers: Obviously this is not a normal video. In the course of researching for my 'Why The Beatles Broke Up' series, I came to realize that no one has ever properly subtitled this incredible (but terrible to listen to) recording. In fact, I could only find one transcript of this recording IN GENERAL, which I referenced and then edited, as I disagreed with the some of the things they heard. Essentially, I am hoping that this video will be a public service for all my fellow Beatles obsessed people. I edited the sound of the recording itself ever so slightly, which helpfully makes it 5% more bearable to listen to.

love u all thanks <3

Me 30 seconds in: It's nice to hear John being lucid and engaged with the band at this point.

Me 3 minutes in: I have no idea what John is talking about.

They seem to understand each other, but to me its like listening to an incoherent stream of fragmented consciousness.

Paul: You've have always been first, John. And I been sort of second and George third.

Ringo: And I've been the cabbage

Lol i love ringo

It's easier to comprehend the lyrics to I am the Walrus than to desipher what the hell John Lennon is trying to communicate to Paul here.
Perhaps its one of those mysterious languages twins invent with each other as Paul sounds like he gets it.

“When we’re all very old, we will all sing together.”

😢😢😢😢😢

It's difficult to follow. "Because, it was you know--"  "And that's what I'm saying. Because before--" "And we've always done it that way." "Yes, but now George--" "My ego, is, is all of our egos."

Love this. They spoke in fragments, each understood what they meant instantly. They were tight. Love how they could speak without getting heated or emotional, just the flow of ideas. So cryptic to us,  yet we grasp threads of meaning.  Ringo. "I'm the cabbage" No, he was truly a Beatle, those drums, the talent,  Intelligence, wit, style, personality! This is an amazing fly on the wall experience.

"your ego is great by the way!"  insane sentence from anyone ngl

I'm kind of impressed of how much of a yes-person everyone else was around the four guys, and can kind-of see how drugs, death, a Magic Alex, a Maharishi or an Allen Klein could wreak havoc to their dynamics as a band. It's kind of painful to listen to them discuss of an exit plan without even knowing they need one. I chuckled at John asking for wine, Mal going red, or...? then someone else going "he was thinking white" or something lmao

also this supports my "Ringo best beatle" rhetoric. He really did his best to keep it together for everyone's sake.

So from what I can gather... and bear with me, this is probably doing a lot of reaching..!
John is saying that Paul's micromanaging of his and George's playing finally drove George away, because nothing they were playing was what Paul had in his head for the final product. John references several Pepper tracks that point the things the band themself didn't work on, like the orchestration or the random cut-up tape sounds in 'Kite'. John wants to play guitar and get his ideas out there, as does George (in John's opinion) but neither are able to, at least not to the extent and freedom that they desire. At the same time, he says that the band isn't working together as it once did and so they may as well work at their own homes, privately, to provide recordings for the tracks to be edited together later. As a result, anyone could be a Beatle and the actual band no longer matters because they're not together anyway.

Paul is attempting to frame it as trying to make a sellable product that people will want to buy(? I'm not positive on this one.) and asserting that the other 3's input matters just as much as it always has. He also seems to be framing this as working alongside George Martin in embellishing tracks with external orchestration or elements.

Yoko, seemingly trying to help get John's point across, seems to be unwittingly instigating a bit of frustration by echoing John's takes- without allowing him to fully make his points himself. In doing this, it leads what would be just a phrase turn into a whole point, such as the 'ego' discussion turning briefly into an unintentional blunt insult. I don't think she means ill here, she's not actively trying to cause a problem. However by interrupting Paul during his own points, he gets a bit frustrated and huffy and responds to her rather dryly and dismissively.

Linda doesn't especially seem to be batting for anyone (though she surely had Paul as her bias) and seems to be trying to make sure everyone is on the same page, more or less. (She may also be speaking up just to be a foil for Yoko, as this really was an issue for the four Beatles to work out internally. Can't be certain, but this is just a thought.)

Ringo is Ringo, bless him. He just wants to make music and do his job.

Overall.. the boys were tired. They were trying to keep stoking a fire that just wasn't going to stay burning much longer. They weren't the young guys in the Cavern Club anymore, and their music had exploded FAR past the skiffle they used to play. Paul is probably right in attempting to be a primary/secondary 'arranger' as their music was becoming dramatically extravagant, as is John (and by extension, George) in saying that Paul's desire for cohesion was causing the others to be glorified session players. (My words, not his.)

They are so honest, in their communication it is hard to imagine people even talking that way now.

Linda seems to be the voice of reason and Paul definitely picked a  strong-minded woman who knew how important it was to work on the relationship (referring to the guys in the band) which is probably the reason their marriage worked throughout her life.

context:
This happened during the documentary series Get Back directly after George left the band for a few days. They went to have a convo with George, it went poorly, and now(in the doc series at least) it would seem that george has left back to his home for a week? they're figuring out what happened and why he left.

what's interesting though, is during Get Back, the editors portrayed it as though this was actually a private conversation between Paul and John at a lunch table in another room, with a "small microphone hidden in a potted plant" but actually it is (im assuming)in the main area and involved everyone else too.
Idk why they curated it as a "special secret conversation" and why they lied about what actually happened during the conversation, but this is the full audio clip.

Wow its very different from what we heard in Get Back

This is absolutely brilliant I never knew the convo was chopped up

Well, that sure cleared things up...

What I’m hearing is Paul wants the other three to do what they do best. If he has a suggestion, he is open to their disagreement. He wants everyone to be their best and most independent self to come together to make something even greater than the sum of the parts.

John is saying he and George are afraid to do that because of the way Paul has treated them the past few years. Even if Paul were to change, John says it’s mostly too late, unless Paul (and john) can be less directive. John also argues that their independence when working together, despite sounding great, cannot lead to something cohesive that sounds like “The Beatles.”

Seems the core disagreement is, can the Beatles really be the Beatles if they go their own directions and still write, arrange, and play music together?

Despite being a huge Paul fan, I would argue no—but hey, I’ve only been in a couple bands.

It is interesting to hear John even mention Pete best .

Great work! To be honest I'm 5 minutes in and I can hardly follow what they're talking about, so many metaphores, so many unfinished sentences, and Yoko keeps interrupting a conversation she's clearly not a part of, it's really weird and really raw...
PS: around 5:05 John basically wnts to create the Wu-Tang Clan of the 70's
