The area around the Bilbao estuary was the center of most of the city's industrial activity throughout the 20th century. We sometimes associate this industrial activity solely with the iron and steel or metallurgy sector, that is, the processing of iron ore from the mines.

However, other types of companies and factories with different activities also existed.

On the right bank, in the Deusto riverfront, in what we now know as the Zorrotzaurre area, there was also a large industrial complex directly related to flour production, which was responsible for the aroma of biscuits in this part of the city for several decades. We are referring to the Artiach Biscuit Factory, undoubtedly one of the largest food factories that ever existed, even internationally.
