There is a piece of arithmetic almost everybody does with whitening, and it is wrong. Stronger gel equals whiter teeth. It does not. Past a fairly low threshold a stronger gel does not finish whiter, it finishes sorer, and a sore mouth is the single most common reason people stop halfway and never get the result they paid for. This is part three of three: doing this without hurting yourself, and making the result last.
What we cover:
• Why whitening hurts when it hurts, and why it is a reversible response rather than damage
• Why sensitivity is not a progress meter, and what it is actually telling you
• The three things that make up the dose, and the three that decide how much of it reaches the tooth
• The one case where the answer really is more time, not more strength
• A traffic light for what to adjust and when to stop
• What actually helps, and why I would not take painkillers before you start
• The mistakes I see most, including the restoration mismatch nobody warns you about
• Whether any of this harms enamel, and what the systematic review found
• Gum irritation, and its two separate causes
• How long a result really lasts, and why the white diet is unnecessary
• Maintenance, and why keeping the trays is what makes it cheap
• Chicago white versus Hollywood white
