sigh people treat eras and/or art/design movements like sigular monoliths that just sprang into being one minute and were gone completely the next. There will always be variety and degrees in any style as it evolves and more people contribute their perspective and takes.

I can’t believe people are actually correcting you on what kind of house you bought. I think you would know that better than people watching a video on YouTube.

A nerd’s explanation: If it looks like it was built by elves = art nouveau.  If it looks like it was built like dwarves = art deco.  ;-)

not people telling a historian that they don't know what design their own home is 😒

I think your home will be a stunning example of Art Nicole. A very niche but lovely era.

I have a degree in interior design. I've studied design history. You  are definitely correct. Art deco was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw your fireplace, even before you started talking about it. It's so odd how people want to correct experts. People just get an idea in their head and have a hard time letting go. Really, they need therapy.

"Art Déco" is hard to define because it was not a 'movement' or a school of art. The artists and designers of that era would not have recognised the term 'Art Déco'; because it was almost unknown before Bevis Hillier used it for the book title in 1966. In the 1920's the style would have been known simply as 'modern' or 'moderne'.

As someone who's special interest is understanding design, its major eras, and how they evolved over time - I didn't even blink in your last video when you said your home was Art Deco. It's not in your face but the influence is there.

Your house is absolutely gorgeous and I love that you took what could be taken as an attack or  criticism and turned it into a learning moment for us all! ❤
Thank you for being so awesome!

😲😲 I was today years old when I realised why this type of style is called "modernisme" here in Catalonia, where I live... Thank you!!
Greetings from Barcelona! 😘

Bit of a cheek to tell you what style your own house is!
Im glad you made this video talking about what a Frankenstein's monster art deco really is and how early art deco isn't easily separated from art nouveau.
I recently bought an art deco vase from the 30's to decorate my rococo room and it fits perfectly. There are some pieces from the same time that would fit into a 1970's brutalist theme, or a kitsch 1950's cottage. Lol deco is so weird!
Looking forward to seeing what directions you decide to go in with your house.

Many don’t realize Art Deco took heavy inspiration from historical societies. And like you mentioned Egypt. You will find Ancient Egyptian influence in some Art Deco architecture and I believe that is the most common of the influences but as you said it wasn’t the only influence. Your fireplace is definitely a blend of historical influences. I see old Asian influence, old European influences, maybe even a little Mayan too. Initially I did think it wasn’t Art Deco until I really got thinking and realized yes your home does have some Art Deco elements. That fireplace is a huge element if that style. I suppose most see the Empire State Building and think that is all Art Deco was. It was and is more than that. The Chrysler Building took a more futuristic approach in some areas like in its original observation deck which was more space themed. The exterior was styled after their cars with motifs of cars and parts of cars. I think the Chrysler Building actually captures the feeling of Art Deco more than the Empire State Building. If people realized it was more than just bold lines they would understand it a bit more.

The TV series Hercules Poirot is Art Deco, even the opening theme of the TV series has a lot of references to it, for example, the style is highlighted a lot in the detective's office.

Imagine telling a design historian who studies fashion and culture and design history for a living that the art deco house she bought wasn't art deco. Couldn't be me

as a interior designer who learned about the history of interior design..  I have to Agree art Deco was a very short lived era !  Your home seems late art deco/ craftsman combo and I'm excited to see what you do with it!

The first half of the 20th century is probably my favorite time period for art and design. So many beautiful ways of defining what “modern’ was. I’ve always thought if I had a Time Machine the 1925 Paris exhibition would be a must see.

You can really see the influence of all these movements and arguments on the Mid-Century Modern style, too!

This is so interesting. Many people love both Art Nouveau and Art Deco and tend to compare them, discuss which they prefer, etc. But no one tends to discuss their relationship to each other. There's seems to be a willingness to think that they were two successive movements, one the esthetic antithesis of the other. I love the way you have connected them and shown the "missing link" of what I guess we could call the "Louis Deco" period. I was unaware of this movement. Interestingly, in the 1960s and into the 1970s, both periods were revived--Art Deco consciously so in many aspects of design, but Art Nouveau influence was frequently seen in the swirly, trippy graphics arts of posters, album covers, etc. I think the 1980s idea of Deco is less apparent to the casual observer due to the distinct color palette and our tendency to regard the 80s as garish and the 20s and 30s as elegant. But it was there. Since I'm naming periods, I'd call it "Negal Deco!" Thank you so much, Nicole, and continued success with your beautiful new home.

Interesting video! I think it might come down to Americans thinking that Art Deco means "Art Deco's greatest hits in the US," such as the Chrysler Building, etc. A lot of what was shown in this video strikes me as individually impressive designs from 1910s and 1920s that do not really form a cohesive whole, so I think it's understandable that people want to create some sort of retroactive cohesion.
