What really gets me too is the mom using Claire as an emotional support animal; projecting on her, dragging her down because “You’re just like me”. Her daughter is more like a teddy bear to squeeze and cry on instead of her child to raise up and protect. That’s how I took it at least
as i expect, dissociatives immediately get the plot. i experience complex dissociation and this is one of my favorite short films. I consider it "essential CDD viewing" (i got a list going) not just because of the subject matter but because of the artistic skill behind it. Jack Stauber is a great story teller, and a jack (haha) of all trades. catchy music, wild animation, and a very depressing plot. and you might be the first person to catch the dads(?) face! i didnt notice that and i watched Opal a thousand times! but yeah, so many implications in so little time. Claires family is abusive yes, but what truly makes this situation so dangerous is the isolation. they live just off a highway in a broken down house. she can't go anywhere else without a car (which they dont seem to have). shes likely not even enrolled in school. they likely have tons of medical debt from 3/4 of them being disabled at the moment and struggle to even put food on the table. the mother is likely the only person with a job. Claire is not being taken care of properly at all. her hair is so matted that its confused for being tied up into pigtails (like a certain girl on a billboard), she sleeps in an attic, she has no toys in sight, shes very likely autistic (nonverbal) and not having her support needs met. some even speculate that she sleeps outside under the billboard when its too much, since thats the only place she can go thats not home.
it's such a detailed and depressing story, there are so many details that you can very easily miss like the fact that all 3 parents broke something (the mother broke her wine bottle, father broke his mirror and the uncle broke his glasses) and the fact that from the very beginning you could see 4 reflections in Claire's eyes which could relate to her looking at the billboard and specifically focusing on the family as we see her fantasies and dream family through her eyes. The fact that you can get so much out of such a short little film is insane! anyway i feel bad for claire she doesn't deserve that even if she's not real!
Great reaction! If you wanna watch more stuff from Jack Stauber, I recommend "Shop: A Pop Opera". It is not as dark as opal, but it also deals with some heavy themes and the songs are just as good
Awesome job quitting, dude, addiction can be so hard. My grandmother smoked for years, and my mother hates it now - can't even stand the smell of it. I'm so grateful she broke that cycle with me and my siblings.
Im so happy that you quit smoking!! Adiction can be super harmfull and usually people only realise that when its too late:( good job and keep going!!:D
