Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visited Kagoshima Prefecture to attend the National Athletic Meet. Sitting at the window of their hotel, their Majesties are signaling with a lantern in hand. What are they doing?

The Imperial Household Agency released the following comments from Their Majesties during their stay (excerpt):
"We are delighted to be able to visit Kagoshima Prefecture together for the first time in eight years. From the airplane window on the way there, we had a beautiful view of the Kirishima Mountains and the countryside with its yellow rice ears. The National Athletic Meet, which was canceled due to the effects of COVID-19, has now been held as a Special National Athletic Meet, and we are delighted to be able to attend with so many people who gathered from all over the country. I can only imagine how much effort those involved have put in over the years. The opening ceremony was impressive, with a dynamic pre-ceremony performance created by a large number of performers on themes ranging from Kagoshima's history and nature. Through this tournament, many athletes have had the opportunity to interact with each other, compete hard, and improve themselves to the best of their abilities. I hope that, combined with the National Sports Meet for the Disabled to be held at the end of this month, this will help to further popularize and develop sports." I look forward to it. At the hotel in the evening, I heard an overview of Kagoshima Prefecture Governor Shiota's administration and gained a deeper understanding of the various policies Kagoshima Prefecture is currently implementing, including the production status of its abundant ingredients and traditional crafts. Afterward, I attended a social gathering with tournament officials, where I met with people who have been active in sports for many years and those who have contributed to the National Athletic Meet. I heard about their respective activities and once again felt the significance of sports. I'm looking forward to watching the fencing competition for the first time tomorrow at the National Sports Festival, and visiting the sweet potato farming site, which I've heard is a major focus for the prefecture. I'm grateful for the warm welcome I received from so many people in the prefecture, including the lantern reception tonight.
