Great interview. Nice to hear the what the aircrew side of Red Flag involved, even though Midds was from the "other lot" at Wildenrath.
I was an armourer on 19F Sqn at that time. I went out for Red Flag in both 87 and 88. I knew we went out to be red air in 87. All the 19F aircrew had special made name badges for their flying suits. Made to look like Russian cyrillic lettering to spell their name or nickname. It really was a sight to drive along the flight line with all the aircraft involved parked up. The exercise was split into 2 halves of 3 weeks each and units would swap over to allow more participants. For the first time out there (87) 19 did the first 3 weeks and 92 took over for the second 3 weeks. They asked for volunteers to stay over and pass on the knowledge we had learned about operating at Nellis. For us armourers this included US explosive regulations for the storage, prep and loading of AN/ALE 40 chaff and flare. Me, being young free and single at the time, put my hand up. So I ended up being out in Las Vegas for 6 weeks!! It was a hard life but someone had to do it!!!!
