In this video, Mark Dayton from Brass Medic shows you how to set up the Minelab Manticore to hear only coins while ignoring everything else. This is a fun and practical way to learn how custom discrimination patterns work, how to accept or reject target IDs, and how to build your own coin hunting program for parks, schools, and other modern coin sites.

Mark calls this setup the “Gas Game” because he and his buddies used to play it at schools and parks to see who could find the most coins in two hours — hopefully enough to help pay for gas on the trip. It is also a great exercise for metal detecting club meetings, presentations, training sessions, and anyone who wants to better understand discrimination patterns on the Manticore.

You can build this same idea around any coins you want. Hunt only quarters and dimes, target specific coin ranges, or create custom patterns for coins from other countries. Once you understand the process, you can use it to make your own discrimination programs for different goals and locations.

I'm old school from the 1266X Fisher school of Iffy tones or signals but this is how you learn any machine by digging the iffy signals. I'm learning the Manticore now and it's a beast once you learn its language and how to fine groom it to your areas. Great Video ! Thanks !

This is proper youtube expert stuff right here.
What type of detectorist spends fours days detecting very little without checking the machine set up "sensitivity" ?
You need to be noise cancelling this machine regularly with a 20 second long press, ground balance and a sensitivity adjustment to make sure you're running it at its peak.

By no means a detecting expert, but your videos are helping me decide if I want to take the plunge into a Manticore. The thing I am really liking about it (at least from videos) is the interface, and I dont have to remember what each menu entry is, it literally tells you on the screen. Plus I really like the visualization of the 2D part of the screen, as it seems to make targets more tangible to me, rather than just a number. Personal preference there, though, I suppose. Thank you for all your vids on the Manticore and everything else!

Loaded the coin numbers I used for my coin program for my nox 900 and it seems to be a good coin program for the manticore too. (On the bench) after all these storms roll through here in Texas I’ll try it out at the park across the street which used to be a dairy farm in the late 1800’s hoping it will pull some deep coins with my recovery speed turned down a notch or two.
