In this episode of Frequency with Prof. Dr. Enis Doko, the conflicts between today's secular and modern values and the Islamic tradition of centuries ago are examined from a philosophical perspective.
Alongside the misconceptions created by judging the past with today's norms, the reasons why Islam did not prohibit slavery are detailed through the economic and sociological dynamics of the period. The way in which issues such as polygamy and early marriage should be understood in the context of the agricultural society of that time, high mortality rates, and the fact that the concept of "youth" had not yet been invented is explained.
Furthermore, the damage caused to the institution of marriage and the bonds of compassion within the family by the "mixed law" concept created by some women today, who selectively choose only the parts of both Islamic law (dowry) and secular law (alimony) that suit them, is discussed with striking examples.
