This is my favorite poem in the moment.  We all long for our innocent childhood or even deeper the loss of family, of belonging to something bigger or perhaps hopes and dreams that never came true.  And we are left as adults often finding our own way, lost without the wisdom and guidance of our elders, now passed away.  We must trudge on through the darkness with lonely courage.

It's uncanny, nay, it's "wyrd" how much old English poetry resembles the Romantics that would come 1000 years later

I have recently started reading old English poetry, so I am glad to have found your video.

Tolkien will stand the test of time with the world he created. It is just so incredibly vast and deep. A complete mythology, with four ages, a complete pantheon, origin myth, several languages and even songs and poetry that is culture specific. What a mind. And what a privilege that he was willing to spend so much time creating the missing mythology for English culture.

The tone and feel of this poem remind me of “Where have all the flowers gone?’ by Peter,, Paul and Mary (written by Bob Steger?)

English is my second language, and I'm still learning it, to be fair. I'm learning through poetry because it seems like it can help me with rhythm and vocabulary. When I first found this elegy, it was a challenge to understand it. But now, with some help, I'm able to comprehend its meaning. Your content is really helpful and interesting. Thank you
