Planning an Alaska cruise can feel overwhelming because there are SO many options—and not all Alaska cruises offer the same experience! 🏔️🚢

In this video, we’re breaking down the most important things to consider when choosing the RIGHT Alaska cruise for you. From the itinerary and ports to glaciers, cruise lines, ships and your overall budget, these decisions can make a huge difference in your Alaska vacation.

We’ll talk about:

🚢 Roundtrip vs. One-Way Cruises — Should you choose a roundtrip sailing or a one-way itinerary? And what about adding a cruise tour that takes you farther into Alaska before or after your cruise?

📍 Seattle vs. Vancouver — Your departure port can affect your itinerary, travel logistics and overall Alaska cruise experience.

🏔️ Which Ports You Visit — Don’t just look at the number of ports—look at WHICH ports are included. Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan are Alaska classics, while Sitka, Icy Strait Point/Hoonah and Haines can offer a completely different experience. Think about what you really want to do: whale watching, fishing, hiking, dog sledding, glaciers, scenic trains, wildlife or experiencing Alaska Native culture.

⏰ Time in Port — Two cruises may visit the same ports but give you very different amounts of time ashore. Longer port stays can mean more options for excursions and exploring on your own.

🧊 Glacier Experiences — Look closely at which glacier experience your itinerary includes. You may see Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord, Dawes Glacier or Tracy Arm. Glacier Bay is particularly special because access is limited and not every cruise ship or itinerary can enter the national park.

🌦️ Time of Year — Alaska’s cruise season stretches from spring into fall, and when you sail can affect the weather, daylight, wildlife, scenery and overall experience.

⚓ Choosing the Right Cruise Line — Do you want Alaska to be the main attraction, or do you also want a ship loaded with restaurants, activities and nightlife? Different cruise lines offer very different styles of Alaska cruising.

🛳️ The Ship DOES Matter — For Alaska, we love ships with great indoor and outdoor observation areas, plenty of windows, covered viewing spaces and good forward and aft viewing areas. You may spend a LOT more time looking outside than you would on a Caribbean cruise!

🌅 Balcony vs. Inside Cabin — Alaska is one itinerary where having a balcony can genuinely add to the experience. But we wouldn’t sacrifice a significantly better itinerary just to get one. There are incredible views available from the ship’s public decks too!

💰 The REAL Cost of an Alaska Cruise — Don’t compare cruises based on cruise fare alone. Factor in airfare, pre- or post-cruise hotels, transportation and especially your excursions.

And that excursion budget can be a BIG one! Flightseeing, glacier landings, fishing, whale watching and adventure tours can quickly become a significant part of your vacation budget. Sometimes the less expensive cruise isn’t actually the less expensive Alaska vacation.

There is no single “best” Alaska cruise for everyone. The goal is to figure out what matters most to YOU and choose the itinerary, cruise line and ship that will give you the Alaska experience you’ve been dreaming about.
