Georgia has more than 500 vanished towns on official record. Some were built by gold fever and emptied just as fast. Some were burned by war. Some were drowned on purpose. And some simply stopped, with no disaster and nobody left to write it down.

We walk through thirteen of them: a Quaker settlement dropped into a colony about to go to war, a company town whose ironworks led to a battle fought by teenage boys, the ground where nearly 13,000 prisoners died, a lake that covers a town on purpose, the Cherokee capital built to prove a point, and a mill town where Martin Luther King Jr.’s grandfather grew up.

And one story you won’t see coming. A Georgia gold town named Auraria lost its people to a new gold rush, and they carried its name two thousand miles west, where it became part of Denver. Meanwhile, New Echota lost an entire nation. Same gold. Same decade. Two very different endings.

The people who lived in these places already told everyone they could. The whispering isn’t secrecy. It’s what’s left after the shouting stopped.
