Calling John Green a "famous Tumblr user" made me cackle

I find it somewhat ironic that we all feel the need to do the dishes etc while we listen to you because we don't feel like we have the time to rest.

This makes me think about how employment bans on asylum seekers helps to demonise them, bc the stigma around not working gets thrown onto them as a perceived moral failure.

the part about disabilties and women spending more time on cleaning is exactly what i mean when i say we do NOT all have the same 24 hours in a day

Someone out there is sitting on a mountain of spoons scorning you for not managing yours properly

You knew the UK doesn’t care about accessibility when Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of our greatest sportspeople of all time, who also has a literal knighthood and a seat in Parliament, was, just last year, forced to crawl off a train on her hands bc it got in late and no staff were called to assist her off, let alone all the thousands of disabled people who have similar experiences

As someone with ME/CFS, a chronic ilness where the only thing that is guaranteed to help you is rest. There’s still so much pushback and so much guilt like it’s crazy.

One of my strongest rest related memories is my mum literally coming into my room during exam season and pouring ice water over me because I'd dared to take a nap when I was 'supposed to be revising'. I had an undiagnosed autoimmune disease that literally made me feel constantly fatiqued. As a society we have so little respect for even healthy children's natural sleeping patterns (see: schools starting at a time that's biologically the middle of the night for teens), and then we wonder why we all grew up into adults unable to rest. Something something, the young and perceived healthy haven't 'earned' the right to rest or be tired and sick.

I didn't know how much you'll get into it,  but in America  the Protestant Work Ethic is an almost insurmountable hurdle to work-life balance.

20:33 My family couldn't understand why I had a disability carer drive me to a concert recently, instead of catching public transport. They've never experienced being an overwhelmed autistic with fibromyalgia running on fumes before the event has even started because two things went wrong with the trains on the way 😩

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”
― Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms: The Play

Being raised by a father who always instilled in me that my entire worth as a human being is tied to my productivity and labor has done immense damage to my psyche. I don’t think I’ll ever know peace so long as I live because any time I lay down for longer than five minutes, I feel the deepest guilt for not doing something, anything.

As someone with ADHD, I always feel lazy and morally bad

The word 'lazy' is an ableist slur. It has its origins in the Protestant work ethic, which has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with justifying slavery.

I need to remind myself of that every time that voice in the back says you just don't care enough to try

"Man you workers are so lazy pull yourselves up by your bootstraps" said the person who contributes nothing to society and hoards recourses like a dragon hoarding treasure

As a spanish person who moved to the uk (im back now though thank fuck) i was shocked with how much socialising didnt feel like resting. It felt like a chore, something that had to be planned in advance, organised and structured. Like if you met up with someone there HAD to be a plan, you needed to be doing something or going somewhere. When I'm back in spain, i meet up with people often spontaneously, kind of going with the flow and just hanging out without much care of what we're doing next.

My uni’s librairy has a nap room, filled with cusions and lounge chairs. Saved me from a day long migraine ( if i don’t rest upon onset ) a great idea.

usually my day off is spent doing my "need-to-do" chores. today was my first proper day off in a while and all i was thinking was how do i fill all this time? i briefly considered staying at home and doing nothing but i just couldn't. so i got up, got ready and convinced myself i needed to go into the next town over... i aimlessly wandered for a few hours before going back home but it felt better than lounging at home in my pjs. this explained a lot, thank you 😭😭

Hi, this is Priyanka from India. I have only very recently stumbled across your channel, and what a pleasure. I am a researcher(theoretical probability) myself and have been burnt out for a while now. And this, although I've just landed a great job (apparently), which makes me feel even more guilty about resting. So this video was very helpful and well-timed. I also wanted to appreciate the research and writing in your videos (I've watched only 5 so far). There are moments when I find myself applauding alone in my apartment. Really grateful, please continue the work. I hope to be able join the patreon sometime in the future 🤞 Thanks again
