Kevin Slavin makes invisible systems playable, legible, and lately, accountable. This is a thin but discernible through-line in a career across art, design, science, game development, and biotech. Trained in sculpture at Cooper Union under Hans Haacke, Kevin co-founded Area/Code Entertainment, whose pioneering work in location-based games led to acquisition by Zynga. He was recruited to the MIT Media Lab as faculty, where his work on urban metagenomics was exhibited in the context of the Venice Architecture Biennale and at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. His 2011 TED talk on how algorithms shape the world became a frequent reference in understanding the ways that systems change our world, and our experience of the world. Kevin was the founding Chief Science and Technology Officer of The Shed at Hudson Yards, and a co-founding editor of the MIT Press Journal of Design and Science. He spent years in biosecurity between commercial real estate, public health and the intelligence community, and is now co-founder of Fairfield Bio, building a global marketplace for non-human genomic data. He served eight years on the board of Cooper Union, including four years as Vice-Chair. Kevin lives in the Bronx with his wife, daughter, and 14 trees.
