Hard to say if this was a sort of depression or artistic perfection, or a mix of both. Either way, it's notable that his love of money did not supersede either.

Extraordinaire

To Kleiber, Music was a deity. He felt it deeply - it spoke to him like God spoke to Moses. He was offended when people disrespected it out of a lack of understanding. I have an autographed publicity poster (April, 1996, Ingolstadt concert) which I will never part with. My kids know they can never part with it either.

Right:  to someone on  the very highest level possible, making a recording of a piece yet again, just because the technology is better, is wholly meaningless and misses the point.

Kleiber has a mannerism of leaving his mouth open to show his teeth, which call to mind those of Dracula.

kleiber is a mediocrity, unlike Klemperer and Mengelberg.

Kleiber sounds a little "off". His dad was the same way.

Schubert 9 is a piece I've long thought would have been ideal for Kleiber with his wonderful sense of rhythm.

"They sound like a youth orchestra but they don't look like one" WOW 🤣

I would have jumped at the offer to conduct Schubert 9 - to me it is one of the truly great works of music which, to my ears, is also one of the most poorly executed works in recorded performances.  I blame the conductors, not the players.  I truly doubt whether Carlos was being sincere about not being able to do better than what was already done.  I would wager he was more worried about the piece of music itself, and whether he could have the time and patience to do the work justice because so many great conductors simply fail.

I wish there were more and longer videos of people talking about Kleiber.

Bravo! Merci

I wish Kleiber recorded an Eroica. Would’ve suited him well

Thank you for this charming interview.  I love Carlos Kleiber recordings and have read Charles Barber’s book.  He was a complex but immensely gifted man
and only his family really might know what was going on inside him.  Still
sadly missed.

Could someone explain why his middle name is abridged using a colon? I have never encountered this custom and am intrigued.

Kleiber was such a jerk.

Thankyou Zsolt for adding this fascinating!!!

The Concertgebouw Orchestra  should have been a better choice than the BPO. Reportedly,  Philips was already negotiating about further recording with Kleiber after the wonderful cooperation of Beethoven's symphonies 4 & 7!

If only Carlos knew he was to become the reference. Such humbleness. If only we had full cycles... miss you maestro Kleiber 🌿🌿🌿

How wonderful that we can hear this story too. Thank you gentlemen Engstroem and Zsolt. 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
