Where I lived, we also had a thing called a "cream roll" which was very similar to a cream bun, & the next best thing to it.
But with the cream roll, the bun was rectangular/elongated/finger-shaped (whereas the cream bun was always a square bun), with a centre slit going fully length-wise. That slit was then filled with sweet mock cream. The top of the cream roll was usually sprinkled with dessicated coconut, whereas the top of the cream bun was just sprinkled with icing sugar.
If the cream buns were sold out, I would usually buy a cream roll instead.
I also recall a thing called a "match-stick" which was either in rectangular slices or fingers, with a thick bottom & top layer of "flaky pastry" sandwiching a layer of sweet mock cream & strawberry jam in the centre, with the top layer of flaky pastry often being iced in a similar patterned manner to the custard/vanilla slice with sweet icing. These match-sticks were sickly sweet & when you bit into them to take a bite, the sweet mock cream & jam in the centre would squeeze out of the sides, which you would then "lick".
The cream buns, cream rolls, & match-sticks are now very difficult to find anywhere these days.
