/* ~~---- VIDEO INFORMATION ----~~ */

Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I’m your host Paul and this video we’re breaking down the Fifth Element.

Directed by Luc Besson it further continues Bruce Willis’ reign as THE 90s action movie superstar. First started off by his appearance in Die Hard, Willis was on a phenomenal run across the decade. Whereas previously things had been resigned to earth though, this Sci-Fi classic did Bruce Willis in SPAAAAAAAAAACE.

Throughout this video we’ll be going back through it and breaking down this amazing movie scene by scene. With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let’s get into the Fifth Element.

The fact that this is Gary Oldman’s version of phoning it in shows how phenomenal an actor he is

It's so sad that Bruce no longer remembers these roles.... Thank you for the memories Bruce ❤

fun fact, as a french kid who grew up in the 90-00s, i can tell you that "Aziz, lumière!" ("Aziz, lights!" in french) became a meme in itself and was something that we all yelled at some point during our teenage years when you had to turn up the light in a room. not uncommon that if a classroom was in the dark because of a presentation, once the presentation was done, one of the student would yell it (and make everyone laugh).
and there was bonus point if you had a friend named Aziz, oh boy that poor kid would be the light bringer forever and would never hear the end of it.

I always got the impression that the 5th element is love. Remember, the other element stones are activated by their element (water for water, fire for fire, wind for wind and earth for earth). Leelo is then activated when Corbin tells her he loves her and kisses her. Therefore the fifth element is love.

The 90s were a golden age for Sci-fi. The X files, Demolition man, Total Recall, T2, Stargate, Starship Troppers, Independence Day, 12 Monkeys, 5th element, Alien Resurrection, Men in Black and of course the phantom menace and the Matrix !

Fun fact for your fun facts: Gary Oldman still isn't terribly fond of the movie, but he's softened substantially on it because his wife likes it very much. These days, the main reason he doesn't like it is because he HATED wearing the costume and he basically gets flashbacks to being draped in rubber.

Apparently, he shared, Bruce really hated the vest too.

Out of all the looks you've had so far, this is certainly one of them.

What is wild, is that this movie still looks GREAT today, and still is infinitely more memorable than anything produced in the last 10 years. I miss the era of practical effects. Digital is overdone and feels like a fever dream.

I pointed out to someone that this is one of the few movies I can think of, if not the only one, where the main antagonist and protagonist never actually face each other. They don’t even really know the other exists except remotely as a name without a face.

One of the best aspects of this film was the costume design. Truly memorable.

One of my favourite moments is when Dallas burned his fingers with the second last match during the call with his mother, being distracted by her news that he had won the trip, and then events intervene to prevent him from having that cigarette using that last match.

Just saying, Paul should have gotten the Leeloo costume 😂

I really wish they made a sequel, prequel, miniseries, comic, or ANYTHING else related to The 5th Element.

This is a movie I adore. Probably because of its campiness. The one thing I really loved were the immaculate cuts bake and forth between completely different scenes. It is just a joy of popcorn, camp, brilliant scenes and action.

Story time: I remember once serving a US soldier, who stationed in Poland. We talked a lot about sci-fi movies and he said that his favourite is Fifth Element because it has the most unrealistic thing a movie could ever have "a helpful and kind taxi driver in New York". I asked him, why did he think so. And he replied "Bro, I was a new york taxi driver for 10 years".

Also fun fact: The dude who tries to rob Korben with the "nice hat" is played by a french movie director Matthieu Kassovitz. He is infamously known for a Vin Diesel "masterpiece" known as "Babylon A.D.". Kassovitz had so much trouble with 20th Century Fox changing his draft of the movie that he recorded problems on set to release it as the documentary "Fucking Kassovitz". I actually reccomend watching rhe documentary as it tells more cohesive story than anything you'd see on Babylon A.D.

2 Fun Facts I'm surprised he didn't mention. 1. Originally Tucker also didn't want to wear the outfits, so they had the costume designer draw up even more outrageous outfits based on gaudy wedding dress. After seeing these, Tucker decided that the first ones were better. And 2. While it was impossible to hit all the notes in the opera, the diva's actress did try and managed to hit almost all of them unassisted.

The character that appears in the bottle of grappa is not the devil, is a Faunus, which is one of Bacchus' acolytes (the god of wine and parties in Greco-Roman mythology) and also a god in its own merit.
