I grew up in an isolated rural valley. The highly related families there routinely sent their sons away to work in the nearest cities, with specific instructions to 'bring home a wife'. Not much has changed!

The leaving of the copper axe suggests to me the possibility that Otzi was murdered by someone he knew, someone who lived in a community that knew and liked Otzi -- so if the murderer suddenly appeared with the copper axe, the community would be suspicious. As today, presumably most murder victims were killed by someone they knew.

I wonder how many of the comparative databases are affected by similar levels of contamination thereby making comparisons and characterizations of other individuals invalid.

It does not surprise me that the metal in his axe came from a distance away. My grandmother was born in a village about 50 miles from where Otzi was found. There was an iron mine on the outskirts of town that goes back to ancient times. People came from a large distance away to this small isolated village to get swords made from this iron. In fact, the name of this valley is not Italian but comes from a Celtic word for a mineral found there. Ancient people traveled more than we might think.

Thank you for this update. I have always been fascinated by Otzi, it will be interesting to see what more we learn in the future.
