Join us on a long-distance journey from Malang to Jakarta aboard the Matarmaja train, traveling through some of Java's most historic railway routes.
This journey features the Matarmaja New Generation Economy Class, introduced on 28 September 2025 as part of the train's refurbishment. The new coaches have 72 seats, replacing the previous economy coaches with 106 seats.
But this journey is about more than just the train.
From Malang, we travel through Blitar, Madiun, Solo, and onward to Semarang before continuing toward Jakarta via the northern railway line.
Along the way, we explore the history and landscape surrounding some of Java's historic railway stations, including Malang, Blitar, Kertosono, Solo Jebres, Gundih, Telawa, Kedungjati, Semarang Tawang, Semarang Poncol, Weleri, Tegal, Cirebon Prujakan, and Jatinegara.
We also look at:
⢠The history behind the name Matarmaja
⢠The Maja and Tatar trains that preceded Matarmaja
⢠The historic tunnel and former bunker beneath Malang Station
⢠Matarmaja's New Generation Economy Class interior
⢠The historic SoloāSemarang railway line
⢠The history of Gundih Station and its three-rail track system
⢠The historic railway network of Semarang
⢠NIS and SCS railway companies
⢠The different track gauges once used around Semarang
⢠Kedungjati and its connection to the historic Vorstenlanden railway network
⢠The early history of railways in Semarang
⢠The railway junction at Cirebon
⢠And the final stretch toward Jakarta
One of the interesting aspects of Matarmaja is its stopping pattern. Unlike many executive-class trains, Matarmaja serves numerous smaller stations. On this journey from Malang to Jakarta, the train stops at 32 stations, including several stops where it gives way to trains with higher operational priority.
The journey also reveals changing landscapes across Javaāfrom the greener rice fields around Malang and southern Central Java to the drier landscape of Grobogan, where teak trees and tobacco fields become increasingly visible.
After more than 40 minutes? Noāmore than 40 minutes of... well, much longer than thatāthis is a journey of over a thousand kilometers?
What makes this journey memorable is not simply reaching Jakarta.
It is the collection of places seen along the way: old stations, historic railway lines, mechanical signaling equipment, changing landscapes, and cities that preserve different chapters of Java's railway history.
Perhaps that is one of the pleasures of traveling by train.
We leave with a destination in mind, but return with more stories than we expected.
Thank you for joining us on this journey aboard Matarmaja from Malang to Jakarta.
