Deep beneath an Alabama mountain lies Russell Cave, an archaeological site containing an extraordinary record of ancient human life in the American Southeast. What began with a few arrowheads discovered near a power-line survey eventually became one of the most significant archaeological excavations in the region. Researchers ultimately uncovered roughly forty feet of layered sediment containing tools, pottery, jewelry, animal remains, and human burials.

The deeper archaeologists excavated, the further back through time they traveled. Different cultural periods appeared in distinct layers, revealing changes in technology, including the emergence of pottery and the bow and arrow, while older levels contained spear points, grinding stones, and ancient fish hooks.

Researchers also discovered evidence of ancient animals and environmental conditions, helping reconstruct a vanished landscape around the cave. Yet perhaps the most intriguing mystery remains what lies beyond the areas already excavated. Russell Cave contains roughly seven miles of natural passages, much of which remains unexplored, while the major excavation found no human activity older than approximately twelve thousand years.

In this video, we explore the incredible history of Russell Cave, the people who lived there, the artifacts buried beneath its floor, and the unanswered questions still hidden inside the mountain.
