Fall asleep tonight inside a great English house in the year 1885, as its lamps are trimmed and lowered room by room and the whole household goes quietly to bed. A single formal dinner ran to 8 or 9 courses and could take nearly 2 hours, waited on by footmen who stood the entire time. Below stairs, yearly wages ran from around £100 at the very top down to just £12 for a scullery maid of 14 who washed every plate by hand. The bedrooms were kept cold on purpose, near 50 degrees, then warmed by hand each night with cans of hot water carried up the back stairs. By 1890, close to a third of all young British women were in domestic service. And when the family climbed the stairs to find the fire lit and the bed already warm, the girl who had done it was climbing higher still, to a cold attic no one had warmed at all.
