Nanokuma is currently home to Fukuoka University and the Nanakuma Subway Line, but where did the name "Nanokuma" originate?

There are several theories about its origin, including one that it derives from "Nanaguruma" (seven carts) and another that it comes from "Kuma" (seven small hills), but the exact origin remains unknown.

On the other hand, "Ancient Place Names and Sub-districts of Chikuzen: Reading from Topography" introduces a theory that the name originated from "Hiji" (meaning "damp mud") and "Kuma" (meaning "damp mud").
